When we visited Zacatecas a few years ago, we enquired, and found housing prices to be pretty low, we were told that $30,000 US would buy a decent house in a subdivision. We liked the city, especially the museums. The state of Zacatecas is poor, and sends a lot of emmigrants to the USA. It can get cold, we were there after a big freeze that killed a lot of cactus and converted the streets into skating rinks. We experienced nice weather in January. I remember a lot of political demonstrations during our visit, we were staying near the Plaza de Armas. You might want to read the newspaper from Zacatecas, it has a small town feel. Obviously it is in Spanish. I enjoy it. http://www.imagenzac.com.mx/ A crime survey indicates Zacatecas has one of the lowest crime rates in Mexico, and the newspaper seems to agree that crime is low. The crimes reported are usually not that serious, mostly auto accidents. There was a killing in a taverna the other day, but the killer was captured by the taverna patrons and handed over to the police. We never found a real bookstore, only stores selling textbooks to students, we must have gone into half a dozen stores. (I am talking Spanish language books, I assume that English language books are not available). The August-September 2003 AIM newsletter covered Zacatecas, and they also found housing prices to be low, with some houses in the $30,000 range. Rentals in the range of $200 to $400 US per month. It would be worth a few bucks to get a copy. For those planning to live in Mexico, one of the best sources for information, especially on the cost of living, is the AIM (Adventures in Mexico) newsletter. It has a practical focus, with each issue covering a different town or area. $19 per year, Apartado Postal 31-70, Guadalajara, Jalisco, 45050, Mexico. (My 2002 renewal included an envelope addressed to 1761 Hotel Circle S, Suite 100, San Diego, CA, 92108, USA). Ask for the back issue list. I recommend Zacatecas as a place to live, if you can accept the weather. I understand that the city of Jerez, about one hour away, has a small expatriate community, and may also be worthy of consideration. http://www.fergusonsculpture.com
