FMM to FM3 and car permit?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Can an FMM become an FM2 or FM3 ? and if so, what happens with the car permit? do you have to go back to the border and renew it to be linked to your FM3 ? This going back to the border twice a year is annoying!.

You can apply for an FM3 and perhaps in some locations and circumstances and FM2 then your visa renewal will be yearly. Your vehicle pass will remain current as long as your visa is kept current. Some types of visa may preclude keeping your foreign plated vehicle but that is not likely to be a concern for you at this time.

I think what she means is does the *existing* permit obtained under a FMM tourist get converted to the FM3 without returning to the border, or does she need to go to the border to get a new permit that would then be attached to the FM3/FM2.

Yes. It automatically become valid so long as her FM3 is valid including renewals.
If she ever drives out of the country, she should turn in the permit at the border and get a new one when she returns.
There is a lot more detailed information here.

Your car permit stays good as long as your visa does. If that means going from a temporary tourist visa to a long-term renewable one then your vehicle is treated the same. The pass on your vehicle is identical regardless of which visa you hold. When INM accepts application for your FM3 you turn in your FMM at that time. You will not be sent to the border for another vehicle pass.

Asking someone behind a desk about that policy is like asking for street direction in Mexico - you will be given directions whether or not the person giving them actually knows.

Thanks Rolly. Good advice for any number of reasons. If you change vehicles in the US because of breakdown, accident, or just buy a new vehicle, not having turned in your old permit will keep you from being able to bring in another vehicle.

I think, howerver, I may want a receipt or some proof the vehicle I would turn the permit back in from has been taken off their computer system or that becomes an area for another potential screw-up. I find it much easier to just not leave Mexico anymore.

Thx for the info on converting to FM3.

When you turn in the permit you get a printed receipt with serial numbers and all the identifying vehicle information. See attachment for sample - name/vin redacted.

I am currently driving my NOB plated car with an FM2 . The sticker is still in good shape on the windshield, BUT THE WINDSHIELD IS NOT. It was shattered on the passenger side by my grandsons head (no seat belt and sudden stop). He wasn't hurt, didn't even cry. I would like to replace windshield, but what about sticker?

Option 1. Drive to the border and turn in the permit.
Then cross into the USA to get a new windshield.
The replacement will cost less in the USA.

Option 2. Take pictures of the broken windshield while it is still on the car.
Then replace it where you are.
Save a chunk of the windshield with the sticker attached.
Drive to the border, turn in the broken sticker, and get a new one.

Rolly, surely there is a way, even in Mexico, to solve this problem short of driving 1,000 miles to the border with a piece of windshield, no? Could not the local Aduana office serve a purpose here?

You can ask, but don't be surprised when they say no.
If they say yes, please let us know what they tell you.

If you find such a way please let others know. Your local Aduana office is probably not even set up to issue/cancel car permits. At best, you *might* be able to go to the nearest sea port where at least Aduana issues permits for incoming shipped vehicles.

I will try the local(Guadalajara Airport)Aduana. When I first drove down from NOB, I was driving a 1 ton dually, which I transfered into my wife"s name at the Aduana. They took the permit and told me to scrape off the windshield sticker and gave her the papers that legalized the pick-up.

Rolly's option #2 seems to be the popular fix. I don't know anyone who had taken photos first but that seems like a good idea that certainly couldn't hurt. Get a small envelope for the windshield piece with the sticker, may as well put a photo in there with it and keep it in your glove or console box.

No one I know has ever had trouble with doing that. But if you find another solution please let us know about it.

Friends had a windshield replaced recently. The glass shop scraped off the sticker and stuck it on the new windshield.

As a word of caution: the removal and re-sticking of a permit might just satisfy the local authorities, BUT:

I once made the mistake of peeling the sticker just prior to pulling up to the border crossing booth where they void the permit. The guy made me put it back on the window for the machine to shoot the sticker. Apparently the hologram was damaged and it took numerous tries at readjusting the sticker to get a good read.

Even when they do remove the sticker properly, there is a residual from being baked in the sun. I would be concerned that certain key components of the sticker might not come off properly in any transfer process.

I'm not ever going to drive my pickup out of the country, so I guess it doesn't matter that my sticker is so sun-bleached that there is no trace of the numner.

In addition to the hologram there is a small electronic chip.

In my experience, the glue on those stickers could hold an airplane together. By the time I finally had to replace the windshield on my van die to cracks and rock chips, I had several outlines of old stickers that were way too much trouble to get completely off. One time an attendant fiddled with it for 10 minutes scraping off tiny bit by bit before giving up.

What I do now is peel off the sticker and spread a dab of vaseline over the glue except for a small "tab" at each corner and a "tab" at the middle of each side. Now they come off whole and leave very little if any residue but are still securely fastened while on.
