FM3 renewal problems

Hey everyone, hope all is well.

My FM3 rentista is set to expire on Jan. 27, 2012. I went to immigration in Guadalajara last week (Dec. 13th or so) and they told me to come back and renew it within 30 days of expiration at the earliest.

This normally would not be a problem, but my schedule is like this:

Dec.23 I leave Mexico for USA and Return Jan.3 (Tuesday) late at night.

Jan. 7 (Sat.) I leave for Cancun

Jan. 10 (Tuesday) I leave Mexico overland for Belize

I will be in Belize/Central America for 5-6 weeks. Obviously, My FM3 would be expired upon my return.

What would you do in this situation? What's the penalty for letting my FM3 expire? The main issue here is that I don't have more than 3 business days together in Guadalajara and last year I remember it taking a lot longer than that to get my FM3....

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Tony

My understanding is that you have up to 60 days from expiration date to get a renewal. You should have no problem getting back into Mexico, but make sure your passport is stamped so you can show you were out of the country as FM 3 expired.

I would go in upon your return in early January and explain the situation, showing them your airline ticket. They can advise. We deal with the Puerto Vallarta office but 1) Several years ago we used to have deadlines almost every single year and they almost expedited it, (albeit the window wasn´t quite that short. It was more like a week). 2) I have oersonally seen them process an FM3 renewal same day for some people who had some kind of good reason (good reason why they had no time). They will probably either do it quickly or give you some kind of temporary document. Anyway, I would share the dilemma with them and see what they say.

Our Progreso INM office has been routinely turning No Inmigrante/FM3 renewals around in a day.
Our Merida INM office has been turning routine No Inmigrante/FM3 renewals around in as little as 2- days.

Our Merida office also has forms for applying for a permission letter to leave Mexico while they are processing applications.

Have you checked with your local INM office to find out what their turn-around-times are in your local office? You may have time. Or you may be able to start the process, and get a permission to leave letter?

It's true that if you are out of México at the renewal time (proof required). you have this free window.
If you are in the country and just procrastinated, you will be fined for being late.

I would check with your office to make absolutely sure about the 60 day period in your local jurisdiction! Be a heck of a surprise if they have a different set of rules and your only excuse was that they told me so on MexConnect.

I had a double shock this year. My Mexican wife died on February 27th. I sold her 1995 van to pay her mothers; property taxes in Mexico (City). I had not driven our second car for several months, and the registration had expired on it.

I called an expediter that I use, to help me pay the late fee, and get a current registration on it. He told me I needed to notify the immigration service within 30 days that I was no longer “Familiar”, but a viudo, after 30 days I would be subject to a fine. The 30 days was already past. I didn't expect it, but nowhere was there any mention that anyone needed to notify them if they became widowed, or that a fine would be levied after 30 days.

After we finished at the Transito office, he went to the immigration service, and came back and told me I needed to pay them $200 Pesos to modify their records. I paid that amount. About two weeks later, he sent me an email saying he had bad news from the immigration service. I needed to pay for a new immigrante visa card, the cost was the same, $200 Pesos.

I had to go there with him, so new fingerprints could be taken, I think I may have used another photo the same as I used for last years renewal in October. At least I now have a new visa card that doesn't expire until November 22nd 2012. So it was almost a wash financially. I didn't need to renew my visa this October.

My expediter is very efficient, and his fees are extremely low. He comes to my house to have me sign any letters that he has written, and he takes me in his car to the immigration office as needed. He also interprets my last three US bank statements himself, at no charge. Yes, the last three bank statements are required here every year, and they must be translated into Spanish here. I used to need to pay $200 Pesos per page to have them translated every year.
