We entered Mexico on our FM3s on May 15, which gives us until June 14 to register at the INM office in Morelia. We went to the INM office today (June 7), under the impression that we had to show them the same documents with which we obtained our FM3s in New York, so we armed ourselves with passports, FM3 books,* immigration forms, financial information, proof of Mexican address, and multiple photographs. * We got the FM3 books in New York before the date the new FM3 cards went into effect. Well, after a two-hour wait we were told they didn't want any financial information. They wanted the passports, FM3s, proof of address, and an ONLINE FORM. We were aware of the online form, but it said nothing about REGISTERING A NEW FM3, so it never ocurred to us that it applied to us. The procedure is apparently the same as renewing an FM3, but without the photographs, which will be for the new FM3 card that we'll get when we renew our FM3s next year. Filling out and printing the online form also generates the famous letter attesting to the truth of the application, so that does not have to be typed separately. Why the new immigration form says that one has to register within 30 days but neither it nor the INM website says a thing about what is required for registration makes me wonder if the requirements are not universal and/or apt to change without notice. At any rate, be informed that the procedure for registering an FM3 in Morelia within 30 days is now very simple, IF you remember to fill out and bring the printout of the online form, and be sure that it contains NO MISTAKES. ================== Jerry Engelbach estudio@jerryengelbach.com
