I saw a t-shirt I like the other day. It said:

Not hispanic
Not latino
Mexican!

I like that tee-shirt! I am not in agreement with the American tendency to link into one amorphous group all those people living in the United States whose first language is Spanish and call them Latinos or Hispanic. Of course, that's slightly better than calling them Spanish because of the language they speak!

There is one group of "hispanics" in the United States who do prefer to be called "Spanish"... in New Mexico and parts of west Texas, the folks who claim descent from the early conquistadores and consider themselves a different people from "Mexican Americans" who they consider arrivistas (as the Pueblos and Zunis consider the "Spanish").
