Your post raises questions. Do you have a poison related emergency? Are you in Mexico? If so and so, why would you want to call a hot line in the US?

Yes, the question is "do you know a number in Mexico for poison control?"

Yes, I am in Mexico. Otherwise I would call the US Poison Control.

I know what you mean, a posion control line, where they can look up all different kinds of things to tell you what to do if they are ingested or you are exposed to them. Not just civil protection, which is what 066 will get you.
Maybe in the DF, they would know, but here in Bahia de Banderas they would come to your house, but have no specific poison database or expertise that I know of.

I live in Mexico City. The list of emergency numbers I have says that 066 is for emergencies and "auxilio policía". It says nothing about offering information about poisons. There is a number for the Cruz Roja (065) but nothing else related to medical emergencies.

True, it is the general emergency number for Mexico City, but various official Mex. Federal Gob. publications list 066 as the number to call for envenenamiento (poisoning).

infofácil.mx has this entry on their emergency services lists: (I have not tried it)

Centro de Control de Envenenamiento (Poison Control)
Teléfono: 1 (800) 682-9211 (llamada gratuita)

You can open a Skype account for free (hopefully in advance so you're prepared), and then call the US Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for free. (or any other US toll free number).

If you have trouble telling them the ingredients from what your kid just ate or drank because they are in Spanish on the label, don't use Google Translate or Babylon,

The absolute best translation website for chemicals & tech info translations that I have found for this is WordReference. Here is the Spanish to English section:
http://www.wordreference.com/English_Spanish_Dictionary.asp

When you find your kid sitting on the floor next to an almost-empty bottle of floor cleaner and blowing yellow bubbles, your Spanish skills might go right out the window and only your English works for the moment. Been there and done that. Good luck.

For this to work I think when you open the Skype account you have to tell them you are in the US. Otherwise 800 number calls within the US are not free, like they are not free when you call from your cell phone in Mexico. I think.

That's what I did - filled out "I'm in the US" when I opened the Skype account. You can designate the country you're in, it's not automatically designated by your IP address. If I occasionally call a Mexico number, it's kind of expensive.

I used Skype to call a Mexican toll free number once, and as I recall I went into my "settings" or profile or whatever they call it and changed it to Mexico. Call was free. Then went back and changed my country back to USA.

Thank you. My latosita is just fine. A friend on a mom forum I am on called US Poison Cntrol for me, I had posted the exact ingredients, suspsected amount ingested and her weight. Apparently she didnt drink enough (adult cough syrup) to be toxic. She didnt show ANY signs of drowiness, which is what the operator told my friend to watch for.

Speaking of Skype, I do have an account, but need to read more about how to use it. So far I have only used it for video calls with the family (to their computers) . I am not sure if I have a number, as I signed up with my email address. I knew you could use it to call phones, but never realized that 1-800 numbers would be free, even from here in Mexico.

I wonder if you put credit in your Skype account, would it expire after a certain amount of time? For example, I could put 10 dollars in credit on my account to have "just in case" . As far as speaking with family, we are working on other free ways (currently use Facetime and Skype) , so I wouldnt be using that credit except for business or emergency things.

I have a skyé worldwide program and I can call phones anywhere in Europe, I have cousins in Africa and Asia and we communicate on t a regular dasis. The phone cost very little. it is something like 12 euros for whatever and when the money runs out it automatically goes to the debit card for another 12 euros. My mother is refusing to get a computer so it is the only way I have to call her without going broke. It is very cheap to call that way. I also call numbers in the States once in a while for very little.

We have Skype, with free calls to the US and Canada, including all 800 numbers. You can set it to automatically add $10 when the account is down to $2. It takes quite a while to work your way down from $10. Or you could do like us and pay $30 a year and have unlimited calling north. Many of the calls we make north aren't to Skype accounts. After seven years here we still have $4 of the original $10 we put on the account. And that was used to call family in Asia.

065 for fire and health emergencies (ambulance, poisonings, etc.) and 066 for police emergencies just about anywhere in the Republic.

I suppose you could call the U.S. Poison Control Center by dialing 001-880-222-1222 though you would pay regular long distance rates

For U.S. "toll-free" numbers (charged at long-distance rate):

1-800-xxx-xxxx = 001-880-xxx-xxxx

1-866-xxx-xxxx = 001-883-xxx-xxxx

1-877-xxx-xxxx = 001-882-xxx-xxxx

1-888-xxx-xxxx = 001-881-xxx-xxxx

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I am trying to sign up for a premium account on skype and it wants me to pay 60$ for a year. Where am I going wrong?

Thanks for any guidance!

Following up Richmx2, I would go for the U.S. number for reliable info over trying to find someone in Mexico who would know. In Merida I believe the authority would be the general public hospital, tho I doubt there would be anyone who would know about anything out of the ordinary, or that you would be able to locate such a person over the phone.

It looks like the Premium account has all kinds of group video add-ons. The Free service doesn't have all of these, but it does have single video calls. We pay $30 a year for unlimited calls to the north because many of the people we call aren't on Skype (businesses, agencies, etc.). A long time ago we set it up on auto annual pay, so maybe we've been grandfathered in if it's not available any more with the free account. After all, Microshaft bought them out.

I noticed that you get 50% off Premium if you sign up for one year. Personally, the Premium service wouldn't do anything for us since we're not into group video. And the video calls with the free service work great.
