Dollars to Pesos

Hi All,
I read Rolly's info on banking in Mexico and I'm a bit confused...
If I walk into a bank with $100 or $1000 US dollars, will they or won't they convert them to pesos for me? I'll be in Oaxaca.
Thanks,
Cynthia R.

Generally speaking, banks will not change money for you unless you actually have an account with them. You will need to go to a casa de cambio to change money.

Like everything else Mexican (and in Real Estate) this question probably depends on...... location, location location.

For example, at Lake Chapala I have gone into an 'investment house' with $250 US and a passport and received pesos. The guy (Mexican) in front of me did the same with $1,000 (I was minding my own business but it's easy to overlook $1000 in pesos!).

YMMV

Changing cash you'll loose about 10% compared to using an ATM card
