Does Marital Status Affect Immigration Requirements?

Can't Post | Private Reply
HI,
I plan to make my first move to Mexico next year. My Mexican wife and I already have a house and I am on the title for half the property. (it is not in the restricted zone). Does my marital status of being married to a national affect my requirements?
Thanks in Advanced, Tony

Hi tony.
If you apply for residency under Vinculo Familiar terms, then yes, your marital status does matter.

If you apply for residency as a typical Residente Temporal or Residente Permanente qualifications, then it often does not matter. Note that the local INM offices and Mexican Consulates are allowed to factor in your property ownership and marriage to a Mexican citizen, but they are not currently required to include these factors in deciding whether you qualify. These things are described at: New Rules and Procedures for Immigration, Visiting, and Staying in Mexico .

Was your marriage officially registered at a Mexican Registro Civil office?

If not, then read this thread for more details: Registering Marriage License

Happy Trials,
steve

I am a naturalized Mexican citizen, long married in the US to my spouse...30+ yrs now. Would there be any advantages for us registering our marriage or getting re-married here? I'm not wanting to complicate our lives but if it is something we should do, we can and will do it. He was granted a temporal on his last renewal because he had a 2 on the back of his card, although we have lived here over 15 yrs.

Do you know the historical record of whether your Registro Civil office willingly approves the marriages of foreigners to Mexicans? Do you know how long the Registro Civil takes to process an application for registering/recognizing foreign marriages?

Our Registro Civil office told us we could not get married here in Mexico, until they officially rejected our application to have our US marriage recognized. I don't think any of us can tell you the advantages or disadvantages until you find out the policies of your Registro Civil. ?
