Document question

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and I will be going to the consulate in New York to get the visa for the fm3.
I will be going as her dependent since my pension and s.s will not start for a few years and they want pension letter and s.s and three months bank statements.

The bank statements have her middle initial and her passport does not.
When we get to Mexico could they refuse the fm3 because the title on the bank account does have her middle initial and her passport does not?

Normally I would not worry but this is Mexico and a lot of things lack logic dealing with the powers that be.

Sure, some low level clerk could make a big deal of a thing like that where in the states would be passed over...

I was under the impression that now a days you entered Mexico on an FMM and the applied for an FM3 or FM2, I thought consulates did not do them any more....

They don't but if you want a manaje de casa ( I knowI spelled it wrong) You go to the embassy in the area where you live they want all the same proof as before. Then they give you a visa put into your passport. Then you go to Mexico and get the fm3. You do not need a Manaje de casa but if you ever leave Mexico without one you have to take your belongings out of the country. With one you have the option of leaving it behind or taking it with you

I think we will get the title of the bank account changed we still have time.

You got it backward. If you bring items without a menaje, you pay an import duty, then the items can stay in México. If you use a menaje, you are expected to remove those items if you ever move out of the country. But, there is no mechanism for enforcing that rule, so it's a non-issue.

My name on my passport does not exactly match the name on my bank statement. No INN person has ever said a word about it.

Thanks for the reply.
I thought that since the laws changed that you can bring them in without the Menaja de Casa but you have to take it out when you go. I called a customs broker in Cancun and that is what I was told. She said with the Menaja you can leave it.

That goes with what I read when they said that the only ones that need it are Mexican nationals returning to Mexico. I figured that jives with the stuff staying in Mexico.

Not to doubt you but wouldn't you think the custom broker would know? She spoke perfect English so no misunderstanding

I would have serious doubts about a Customs Broker in Cancún knowing the mensaje rules. Check with a Customs broker on the border, as they are more likely to have handled mensajes.

And Customs Brokers don't know everything, not by a long shot! When I brought a shipment of 750 new books into México (at Nogales), the Customs Broker was going to charge me duty and IVA. I had to instruct him that books (from NAFTA countries) have no duty and books in México have no IVA. He looked puzzled, went into his office and either called someone or looked it up, and a few minutes later came out and said yes, I was correct.

Although I came to México with the clothes on my back, a suitcase and my dog, so have no direct experience with the mensaje, many, many folks in Mazatlán that I know have come in with one, and they have the same thing to say that Rolly posted.

I had questions asked about the names on the passport and name on the bank statement not matching and was told by one of the immigration agents it could be a problem but in the last 10 years the statement has always been accepted-

Having an extra initial on the statement could bring them to ask why it is different from the passport in this application or future applications . You never know what will trigger their curiosity and the less triggering and the better off you are.

What you have to worry is the name on the passport, it is considered the only legal name and you should make sure that when applying for anything your wife uses that name exactly as in the passport. She should not use any initial or middle name that is not in the passport or have the passport change if it is important to her. Remember that if you buy a house or open a bank account , when you apply at IMSS , INAPAM, when applying for the CURP etc...

My belongings were shipped in on a menaje, and the shipping company(Mexican) made me sign a letter for customs stating that I'd take the stuff out if/when my stay in Mexico ended. This was in 2007.

The easiest thing to do would be to change the bank account while you are still in the US to match her passport. Out of curiosity, why doesn't her passport have her full name on it?

Then in the overall scheme of things, what does her birth certificate say? If at all possible, get all the docs to match if you can.

Change the bank statement. So easy.

Change a US passport? Not so easy. Change Mexican beauracracy? Impossible.

Change the bank statement.

I think a passport could be changed to add your middle name on if you didn't have it on to begin with. You will not be able to get a birth certificate changed, and if possible, all should match.
If the birth certificate has no middle name, then by all means change the bank account!
Of course marriage often changes a woman's name away from what is on her birth certificate.
