Don´t know what the regs are, but while I´m just in our own town or general area I leave mine at home. I do take them both with me if we´re driving or traveling anywhere where I´m going to be gone overnight or longer.

I carry copies and I was once on a bus that was stopped for an army inspection--and I was given hell by the inspector for not having my Visa on me. I thought I was going to be arrested.

Most of my friends and I in Ajijic have miniaturized copies of important papers on us in our wallets at all times and only carry our important papers when traveling. I don't know whether it would be practical for you to obtain a local driver's license or not, but I usually find that my Jalisco drivers license is all that most folks want.

I was recently gifted with a Mexican notarized copy of my passport and told by my attorney that it would be accepted all over Mexico. I think I'll do the same with my FM-3 when I return from this trip.

While traveling I carry originals; around or close to home, copies in the glove box seem to be enough. My Jalisco driver's license, like Pete says, also seems to be acceptable proof that I'm legal.

Shameless self-promotion:
