Hey Brian, The diesel will pay dividends. Gasoline is more than two dollars thirty cents US per gallon, while diesel costs a bit more than one dollar eighty cents. Buy an official factory service manual for your VW, and then visit the boys at the VW factory parts department in a city near you. Make clear arrangements as to how they can send replacement parts if needed through FedEx or DHL. Ask if they will accept credit card payment over the phone. Even your gasoline Westphalia uses completely different smog and computer parts than the VW's made in Mexico. So don't worry about having a diesel rather than a gas rig. A local mechanic down here perused his way through a shop manual for my diesel GMC and repaired a nagging problem in record time. The only hitch was he nearly cried when I asked for the manual back. The information and trouble-shooting inside are worth their weight in gold. Bring several replacement filters, belts, hoses, and make sure your water pump is in like-new condition. Before you leave is a good time to go over everything with a fine-tooth comb. Ask a talented VW diesel mechanic which ten parts he would take along on a trip to Mexico. This should get you started. Mexican diesel is of -excellent- quality if it doesn't get contaminated with moisture and scale during transport and storage. I count on getting ten percent better fuel mileage on Mexican diesel as compared to diesel in California or Arizona. And, diesel pumps are widespread enough (look for the black product ID signs at the gasolinera) to make driving worry free.
