Dia del Transito

I don't know about where you live, but here today is the "Dia del Transito". I knew it was getting close, but had forgotten the exact date. We headed to the market earlier and every transito in the city is out in his best uniform, standing in the middle of some street. Amazing the stash that some of these guys collect over the course of the day, everything from boxes of cookies to bottles. And of course each one has his own little (or big) box to receive cash donations.

I guess it's only right that they get to have their day too. They can't simply come to the door like the mailmen can.

I look at it as a chance to prepay my mordida........

I didn't know there was a Dia del Transito. Who is the patron saint of traffic cops?
Here in southern Nayarit, I haven't seen any sign of the "event".
Some people, including some transitos, think that every day is Dia del Transito!

I saw in the paper today that the transit officers in Puerto Vallarta were honored with a party and dance for Dia del Transito. I didn't hear anything about boxes for donations.
It seems it was like Dia de los Bomberos, more a day of honoring their service than of receiving gifts.
I go along with tipping "my" mailman and "my" garbage collectors, but don't think a day to tip cops or firemen is a good idea. If the firemen come put out a fire or get bees out of a tree, it's nice to offer them drinks and a snack.

Ed:

I have already contributed 300 pesos to the Tuxpan traffic police last July. It was not voluntary, and it was completely unjustified. Your identification of their patron saint is not just funny, it is completely appropriate.
