Cost drop in importation of older vehicles to Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello all:

Regularization of Vehicle Costs to drop 25% on May 2, 2011.

On May 2, 2011 the cost of importing a 10 year or older vehicle to Mexico is supposed to drop 25% according to an agreement between the Governor of Chihuahua and the Federal Government.

The "Sol de Zacatecas" of 14 April 2011 on page 9E republished an article from the "El Heraldo de Chihuahua" of 13 April 2011. In the article it said that the Chihuahua Governor, Bruno Ferrari, had arranged the drop in cost with the Federal Government and that the new rules for the importation of vehicles older than ten years (2000) will be published in the Federal Diary the first Monday after Easter Week. As Easter is the 24th of April this year, that should be on Monday the 2nd of May.

While there aren't many of us who will be affected by this change in import costs, it seems from reading these forums that there are a sufficient number for whom this will be good news.

As ever, jerezano

Does this mean I will be able to nationalize my 97 Toyota 4runner?

tonynico, If your VIN doesn't begin with a digit, rather than a letter, I would GUESS that it still can't be imported/nationalized, as it wasn't produced in a NAFTA country. But that is just what I said…a guess.

I was under the impression that only a Mexican citizen can import a car under those programs.

That's what I keep reading on this forum, but I personally know two foreigners—both holding FM3s—who have each imported and nationalized more than just one used auto that was legal to import to México.

It states "Governor of Chihuahua and federal government." Doesn't this only apply in Chihuahua?

Most of the border states have worked out some solution to this problem. They have used an amparo in some.
