Colima tragedy

Can't Post | Private Reply
The shit hit the fan in Colima today. Ex-governor Silverio Cavazos was gunned down near his home. The tragic part is, his bodyguards, in their haste to capture the shooters, opened fire on a "suspicious" vehicle and killed its occupant who turned out to be a Colima physician and completely innocent. According to the radio report of the incident the doctor was accompanied by his 12 year old daughter. The bodyguards were arrested.

So add more innocent victims of the "War on Drugs". If this kind of stuff was exported along with the dope maybe the gringos would wise up.

HUH? Was the former Gov. of Colima associated with drugs, or was this a political murder, or are all crimes now "drug related"?

I am surprised you need to ask such an obvious question seeing how much time you put into research for your various publications.

I gather someone decided your original replay needed rewording... though it hardly bothered me... and I don't say the ex-gov's shooting was NOT narco-related, but that there is no evidence so far that it is. Political violence isn't unknown in this country, and it would be very poor research indeed to jump to the conclusion that a murder of this sort is automatically "drug related" (which nicely eliminates the need for much in the way of investigation, especially when it might get messy).

And I am surprised anyone can declare someone else as "completely innocent". How do you know this for a fact? Yes, I guess I have lived here too long.

For someone who promotes their blog, which consists of your own subjective opinion based solely on news stories from other sources and does no independent investigative reporting I'd say this is a classic case of el burro hablando de orejas.

It might be amusing to keep an eye on your blog to see how you "report" this story.

Did you feel the same about these people's innocence:

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/primera/35503.html

Did you question the innocence of the students of Monterrey Tec who were killed during a shootout?

Maybe you haven't lived here long enough.

I like to hear if the ex-governor was involved or not with the drug trade. I've tried to follow the story, but I've read nothing except that he and his wife were murdered. I don't understand why BG is jumping on others for their questioning of his conclusions. It seems that every murder is associated with the cartels and that's a rather juvenile assertion. What does this story have to do with someone blog? That appears to be simply a personal attack.

Since his wife wasn't attacked and is still living I suggest you reread your source of information.

"Al ex gobernador le sobreviven su esposa Idalia González Pimentel y sus tres hijos: Silverio, Andrea y Jessica."

Cavazos has been linked to the drug trade for years.

The above quote and many more like it can be easily found in the "juvenile" mainstream press.

Catchy headline. He also was reported to have given this information:

El procurador detalló que tres personas llegaron al domicilio de Cavazos en una camioneta reportada como robada en Querétaro, que tenía placas sobre puestas de Michoacán. Una de ellas bajó de la camioneta y fue el que disparó.

Díaz Rivera también aclaró que el ex gobernador no había recibido ningún tipo de amenazas, y que por el momento “no se puede precisar narcotráfico ni venganza política; no podemos, no hay información para señalar algún motivo”

In which he says they have no motive as of yet but nothing to show it was a narco hit or political motive. But 3 dudes show up in a vehicle ripped off in Queretaro with plates from Michoacan. Must have been the jealous husband of some hot jovencita he was playing around with.

The same guy was being interviewed this morning via telephone on a news program. When asked to explain what had happened to the doctor that was killed he gave two completely different versions. When this was pointed out by the newscaster he admitted they really weren't sure, it was still very confusing. So if the guy can't get a clear picture of what took place with many eyewitnesses how can he so quickly rule out involvement by narcos in the other murder?

Are you forgetting the Dr and his 12 year old daughter? Just collateral damage? The child will carry the image of her dead father... forever.

This morning on the Televisa news program the present Governor of Colima cleared up the details surrounding the death of the "completely innocent" victim gunned down by the police. Previous versions varied somewhat but basically claimed the Dr. had failed to stop at a roadblock. Now according the the press conference it was made known that the man wasn't even in a vehicle but actually on his own property when he was killed. The governor blamed "inefficient police" who failed to follow proper procedure.

This case mirrors others where law enforcement has killed innocent people in their pursuit of suspects. They deny, obfuscate and lie in their attempts at a cover up. Anyone who has lived here long enough would recognize this as a normal and typical reaction by the government.

Mark up another completely innocent victim of the "War on Drugs" who paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep a line of blow from reaching the nose of a selfish gringo.

According to another poster, an American who doesn't reside in this country, these situations are acceptable to people who cherish freedom. Is there no limit to gringo arrogancy?

I've followed this story through various news links and waded through Spanish comments. Since the shooting death of the ex-governor and the doctor. Watching the story slip and slide through various versions and numerous viewpoints.

May both men rest in peace. Condolences to the family. The doctor had 30 years as an opthamologist with the ISSTE and dedicated part of his work to the disadvantaged.

Public concerns over security in Colima have rocketed over the past year.
The state seems to have gone from a perceived quiet backwater, free of narco-violence to being another place where, 'no pasa nada' is not longer the situation. The Guadalajara shooting of drug king-pin, Nacho Coronel by federales this past year, has likely led to jockeying for control of the lucrative illegal drug trade among opposing political/narco factions in the greater region.

96 deaths, related to narco-violence have been recorded. Many people are still upset about the seven missing young men who drove down from, Sahuayo to Colima. And disappeared.

The State is politically 99% PRI controlled under a few powerful families who take turns, running the place. Sometimes waging political internal wars.

Always, there have been allegations of corruption, all kinds. For being such a small state, Colima has enjoyed economic prosperity largely due to the international Port of Manzanillo, through which vast amounts of cargo pass, both legitimate and illegitimate. Agriculture also flourishes in the state.

The two main state political party leaders are calling for dismissal of both the Attorney General and the Director of the State Preventive Police. as mentioned in one of Bennie's link.

These political leaders met in September of this year to demand the resignation of these same officials. They are calling for the resignation even louder as public insecurity rises due to the recent death of the ex-governor and the doctor.

The state Pan leader is calling for what reads like; Mando Unico for Colima.

If the current Governor and/or Attorney General and/or Directory of State Police are into narco-politics then they are not likely to want to lose state control of security forces.

Hope this synopsis is not too way off the mark.
