Christmas Eve Dinner - What to bring?

Can't Post | Private Reply
We're lucky enough to have been invited to share Christmas Eve dinner with a Mexican family. They are by no means hurting for money. I know Christmas Eve is the big night in Mexico, and I have no clue what to bring as a gift. In the US, I'd probably just bring a nice bottle of champagne and flowers, but one of the hosts is a recovering alcoholic, so that's out.

Is it customary to bring something more substantial or is this not a big deal? Thanks.

A basket of fruit and nuts would be nice. They have them at Sam's and supermarkets.

An assortment of home baked cookies and/or candies if you do that sort of thing.

If you can make a special desert, ask the lady if you can bring it.

Tashby, go Mexican…. Take a dozen or so, of good tamales. They are always eaten, and well appreciated.

Bon appétit

Cultural question here - is it appropriate to take food to the home of well to do Mexicans. I understand tequila, flowers and maybe a good box of chocolates but is food appropriate from foreigners?

There is nothing inappropriate about foreigners bringing food to the home of Mexicans. However, a dozen of even the finest tamales strikes me as a tad tacky -- and cheap. A nice box of candy, liquor, flowers -- or even a basket of goodies to be consumed later -- is always in good taste.

Bournemouth, that is a good question. Of course, the answer lies in the heart, soul, and friendly intent of the person delivering the Tamales. I have, in the past, found it a bit kindred, especially when you come in the home with a smile and a sense of generosity and say, estos tamales me encante, por que son muy sabrosos! (These tamales were so delicious I fell in love with them). Its all in the warmth, the delivery and the intent.

Its like something of their culture you've grown to appreciate and care to share. But then again, perhaps this is just me and what I've experienced before. Don't take it to seriously, it's only a friendly gesture.

Like Oscar, I love tamales. But if the family is well to do, I don't think they'd be a good choice for Christmas Eve.

I'm pretty sure you'll find the family dressed up, using the good china and crystal, and dinner may be several courses. It really is a special occasion. I might bring some sparkling grape juice instead of champagne, and a box of chocolates or flowers.

Or even a large bottle of sparkling cider which is always available at this time of the year.

Thanks, Jennifer, for sorting out the food question in my mind.

For one family in Hidalgo I took Brie (baked in a crust covered with nuts and honey). Yes, I actually found the cheese with no problem.

For another family, A CD of music, last year Sarah Brighton, opera since that fam enjoyed the type of music.

At my more humble in-law's house, someone ALWAYS brought tamales (the kind we don't make in that area as there are many different kinds). Never viewed as cheap by them.
