Car question

  | Private Reply
trying to decide to bring a car or to buy a car in Mexico.
I will ship it not drive there are many problems with bringing the car.
So it might be easier just to buy one.

My question is this. There is a tax to be paid every year for 10 yrs when you buy a car in Mexico.
Can anyone tell me how much tax each year am I looking at and how much is it to register the car every year?
Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving.

Tony

The car tax is due to be phased out in 2012. Meanwhile, we bought a Honda in July, at which time the "car tax" had been waived for the last part of 2010 to stimulate the auto business. The dealer said nobody knows what will happen in 2011. I think we saved about $600 on our car. Depends on the price.

Personally, I'd go ahead and buy a car in Mexico and get the hassle over with. When you bring a U.S. plated car down, you have to go through many hoops to get rid of it. There's at least one previous thread on this subject you might want to check out. It was extensive.

So does it mean that if you buy a car before 2012 you are stuck with paying the tax for ten years or will they just do away with it for all cars 10 yrs or younger no matter when you bought it?

Thanks

Tony, You should realize from reading this forum regularly that your question, "So does it mean that if you buy a car before 2012 you are stuck with paying the tax for ten years or will they just do away with it for all cars 10 yrs or younger no matter when you bought it?" is unanswerable. The only proper answers are: "Who knows?" or "It will depend…"

The changes have been great, but this is still ¡México!

Go get a Jeep Liberty, preferably '08 or before, they're cheap, license it in South Dakota. It's perfect for MX, cheap to own and license.

I thought about Jeeps/jeep liberty. The problem is when you buy a car in the U.S. even if the same car is made in Mexico the parts are not interchangeable.
So finding parts for a jeep or jeep liberty in Mexico might present a problem.

Tony, you make it seem like they are two different cars. The parts in question are the pollution parts required for the US.

We had a Toyota pickup, U.S. plated, when we moved to Mexico. Repairs were inexpensive, but parts, imported, were very expensive.

I might be mistaken but parts are not parts.
A part for a car built in Mexico say a chevy car and the same car selling in the U.S. Might the exact same fit on a particular part.

My USA-bought Dodge pickup that was built in Saltillo has brake parts that had to be ordered from the USA.

Yes. It looks exactly the same until you open the hood.

Or, you can do like I do... drive a Forvo: a 1982 Volvo 760 with a Ford Courier engine.

I pay a little over 1,400 pesos /yr for liability only, including civil damage and legal assistance. I think it was slightly more the first year, maybe 1,500? My car is an '87, so I don't have to pay the tenencia (late model tax).

I should have been more specific. Many models come with several engine options. Most of the parts under the hood are designed as part of an engine system. When you call an auto parts store, one of the first questions after year and model is the engine size. So, the real question should be, is the engine configuration you bought in the U.S. available in the Mexican market?

The amount of taxes and insurance would vary based on what car you get, wouldn't it?

Liability only won't be dependent on the type of car, and I thought but don't know if tax is a percentage of the cost of the car.
So I thought I could get an idea what I would be looking at.

I guess I didn't see where you said liability only. Having never bought insurance for a car plated in any Mexican state, I don't know the variables.

When I go into a store here the parts for the Liberty are listed exactly like NOB. And, the nice thing about the Jeep is that it's tough and doesn't need "fixing". The only two weak areas are the electric window regulators (they use a cheap piece of Merces junk) and the infinity speakers - I figured out how to fix both. The outside spare tire and mounting bracket need to be locked, otherwise the car is perfect and I specifically wanted and needed one that was strong enough to pull a trailer down which it did easily. I still license it in TX and insurance here for the year was $365usd.

To license a car in Texas do you need an physical address or would a mail box drop be ok?
I worry a lot the one thing that bothers me is if I reg the car in the U.S when health care kicks in will they try to say I am a resident of the state where the car is registered?

IN N.Y. you can reg a car without being a resident. In S.D new law you have to be a resident. Their residency requirment is low a hotel receipt will do.

But the health care thing might come into play.

P.S.
Where I will be living it is a little island might not be able to get the car parts for the liberty.
I will weigh it out and make a decision for better or worse. LOL

Did I read somewhere that the tax is 10% of purchase value the first year, 9% the second and on and on until year 10 when you pay 1% and are then finished paying tax?

That is nuts
On a 15 thousand dollar car you would be paying $8250
That is crazy it is a no brainer if that is the case. I don't mind paying tax but to pay over 50% of the purchase price in tax is not happening.

I will ride my bikes before that happens.
