Car permit letter after renewing FM3

We just returned from the U.S. Stopped at the Columbia crossing to get our car permit. The lady that helped us at Banjercito told us to be sure to go to Aduana and request a letter when our FM3 is renewed. This is to make sure your car permit is still current. We have been driving with FM3's for more than 10 years and have never been told this before. We always thought the law states that as long as your FM3 is valid so is your car permit. Is this something new? Has anyone does this?

That rule, which nobody followed anyway, was dropped in March 2005.

which rule Rolly - dont understand - do you mean that we are ok with our car so long as our FM is valid - the reason I would like to be sure is my son is going back to Mex and his FM is OK so we always assumed he was legal with his car permit - however the sticker is a bit old and weary on the windscreen - do you think he will have problems. Can he ask for a new one at the border?? regards Wynco.

That is the rule I was talking about. It no longer applies.

Your car is good so long as your FM3 is valid. Don't worry about your old sticker. Mine is so old the numbers have faded away.

He can get a new one at the border if he wants.
