Car Permit Renewal

Can't Post |
Hello Everyone! I am sure this has been posted many a times, but I have a question about the car permits. I already have a US car here, and have the temporary importation permit. NOw I have decided on staying longer than the 6 months permitted. Does anyone know how I can go about renewing this? Do I have to cross the border, cancel it, and cross back into Mexico to register for a new one? (and if so, do they give you any hassle for geting another one?). Or is there any way to do that in MExico, without driving back to the border? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Kristina kdenucci@hotmail.com

While you haven't told us what your immigration status is, I assume from the tenor of your post that you're here on an FMT (tourist card). That's only good for a maximum of 180 days, and it cannot be renewed. A new one can be issued after you depart the country and re-enter.

While back-to-back FMTs are possible, the law says that only one car permit can be issued to individual in a year's time. And that would bar back-to-back car permits. (Now, there are those who have slipped by, and that's well and fine for them, but yours could very well be the instance where the officials at the border take note of what's been entered on the computer.)

If you wish to temporarily import a car for more than the single 180-day period in a year's time, the answer is to qualify for and obtain an FM-3 immigration status. If your FMT has not yet expired, you can apply for the FM-3 at the INAMI office having jurisdiction over your place of residence in Mexico. And once the FM-3's been granted, your car can remain with you.

Hi from Puebla, Mexico... Our first year her my husband brought the car in under his name.... six months later we drove to Laredo and I then brought it in under my name. There was no problems.... we just went in separately and tried to see a different person to avoid questions! I now have my FM-3 so the car can stay as long as I can.

From Puebla,
