Buying in the US vs Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
We will be purchasing a diesel pick up in the next 6 months and live 2 hours south of PV with a daughter in TX. We are thinking the additional tax to import and nationalize will be worth it s we will have many more options for gently used, diesel pick ups in the US and Carfax and other sources to verify condition. Would like your thoughts if you have looked at the same issue. Would like input regarding importing ourselves and/or with an agent.
Thanks!

I presume you are getting at 6 wheel pickups cannot be imported no matter the year or engine. [dually]

I'd buy in the U.S. for sure. I don't think you will end up "saving" any money though by buying in the U.S.- while vehicles are cheaper... the huge cost of importing it at that border will eat up any savings you made.
However, I think you will probably get a better quality car. One with lower miles, and with less wear and tear (thank you Mexican potholes, flooding, speed bumps, etc. etc.)
Also probably will have had less tampering. We recently bought a 2000 Jeep here in Mexico, supposedly has 75K miles on it... yea, right!

Please correct me, but as I understand it we will have to use a Broker/Agent at the border when we bring the truck across? We normally cross at Columbia Bridge. I understand we need to purchase a truck at least 6 years old? Can you tell me how I might estimate the tax that will be due in advance of my truck purchase? My current Dodge Ram which is worth maybe $4,000 cost $2200usd to Nationalize, we had the truck on a TIP for many years and hired an agent in PV who took care of the paperwork so we never went to the border.
Thanks in advance.

I think you should talk to a car broker to get all your answers. They can tell you what kind of truck you can import and how much it will cost you. I don't think there are any car brokers at the Columbia bridge, you have to go to Laredo. I understand broker fees are less costly at Nogales.

I'm not an authority on the subject.. but there are numbers you can call in advance to see how much and what can be imported. You could even find brokers via internet probably, and ask them to get an idea.
