Buying a Regular Telephone

I brought Magic Jack with me so I can plug it into my computer and get a US phone number, and thus make calls to family and friends for free.
I went to Coppell, the large department store, to buy a landline phone to use with Magic Jack, and they insisted i need to give them a landline phone number before they can sell me a landline phone.... was I not understanding?
Is this a new requirement in Mexico?
Maybe I just need to learn more Spanish... I'm studying...;-)

Unless there's something even newer I don't know about, I bought a land line phone off the shelf and out through the register from Walmart here in Ajijic less than a year ago. No questions, no hassle.

you do not need a land line to buy to buy a phone. If that store is refusing to sell you a phone go somewhere else. Coppel asks for address and phone numbers for anything you buy but it does not mean they will not sell you whatever if you do not have a phone. Many of their customers do not have a landline. I think you misunderstood whatever they were trying to tell you. Go somewhere else where they do not have to give any information. ie Walmart.
