Buying /Selling Artwork

Been frequenting the Yucactan 3-4 times ea.yr. since 87'. My question is, now that I'm getting serious about staying for extended periods other than meeting tourist visa requirements, what type if any license do I need to sell my art ( my own) currently, I sell a small amount directly to galleries. Must I set up a business, FM3 etc...? I know some countries have different laws pertaining to art. (My first post-go easy on me-thanks for all the great info!)

FM-3 with permission to work is what you're seeking. You'll need an RFC from Hacienda (the equivalent of a Social Security or TIN from the Mexican equivalent of the IRS).

I'm guessing the painting you posted is one of yours--very nice. It's not automatic to be able to get a work permit--read what it says elsewhere on MexConnect on how you do that. San Miguel has lots of galleries which display work by both Mexicans and gringos so it can be done. Generally you can't get a work permit for a job that a Mexican can do, but it certainly can be argued that each artist's vision is unique so I think that helps.

Probably you won't be able to get the prices you can in the states. One of the local artists here is thrilled to be invited to display in a Scottsdale, AZ show, where he expects to get at least double if not more. Much here is for sale for $200-500US, with some things in the thousands, while I remember Scottsdale galleries usually charged in the thousands for a decent oil.

Thanks Carol for the kinds words and the information. Much appreciated.YES, one of mine!

As a member of several art organizations here in the U.S. I know all too well how the prices can be outrageously high. I intenionally show very little in the states because of that. Funny how a gringo will pay much less for the same art work in Mexico or other Caribbean locations but even funnier to see the look on their faces when they find it's by an American (especially my "tropical" style.) Being located in the Midwest, it seems pigs, chicken, deer and lake scenes are what sells, (not where my heart is.) I sell quite well along the Mayan Riviera and other Caribbean locations, allowing me to travel, scuba dive and watch the looks on the gringos faces. I paint out of pure love of subject and that's why I MUST begin the re-location process, not the money.

Thanks again!

P.S., Galleries have always been extremely overpriced in New Mexico (my own opinon.)

I believe there are monthly and/or annual tax reporting/filing requirements--even if you sell nothing, and this can be a pain.
