Bringing a car to Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this Question?

If I ship the car by boat and it has a the sticker and paper work that the Mexican gov't issues allowing the importation of the car, would I have to pay an import tax since I am not driving it across a boarder?
I would hope not. Since I am picking it up at the port with all the correct paper work.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

The fee you pay to temporarily import a vehicle is paid in the cost of the permit and sticker. It's expensive and a bit of a process to ship via cargo ships, but you probably know that already.

$900 to ship. I was just wondering if there would be in import fee since I did not drive it in.
Considering what is going on I would rather pay $900 and ship it. If you subtract out gas tolls, motels, and take in the risk factor. $900 sounds ok with me

Where are you shipping from and to? That is a good rate.

Hi Tony,
I am hoping you might be able to answer some questions for me (sorry, i do not have an answer to yours though). I too am a Florida resident (Broward county) and planning on moving to Mexico next year. However, I will be visiting in a month or two for a couple of weeks. What steps did you have to take for your move? Did you have to get a visa, a work permit, and how did you go about getting all these documents. I am totally clueless but would like to start the process early rather than wait until a few months of my move to start. I wish you luck with your move and hope all work out well for you.

I am retiring so I do not need the work visa. I am planning to pick up my fm3 where I live in Mexico.
I will be getting my car permit by internet. The big part for me is the mover.
