Yes. Wolfgang Cordan wrote about both men in the 60's. I forget the title Stephens piece, it was a was done as a summary of the lives of Stephens (and to a lesser extent Catherwood) during the Incidents of Travel years. Later he wrote a biography on Catherwood, titled, Frederick Catherwood, Architect.
You could find them in libraries or through an internet search of used books.

I have an active interest in the area and have accumulated several books and articles, however I am ashamed to say that it appears little of this information has penetrated my brain.
I gave you the wrong author -- Wolfgang Cordan. The author I should have given you is Victor Wolfgang Von Hagen not Wolfgang Cordan. (I do have a translation of a book of his about the Maya.)
It was Wolfgang that triggered my memory I suspect.
I find that there are several books on the early archeological history and exploration of the Mayan area available on the web. I have had good luck with E-bay, at prices considerably less than posted book dealers.
It is suprising how many interesting books were published in the middle years of the last century.
The title of the Catherwood biography is Frederick Catherwood, Architect, and the title of the Stephens work is Maya Explorer.
: : Yes. Recently I bought a copy of "Maya Explorer", John Lloyd Stephens and the Lost Cities of Central America and Yucatan, by Victor Wolfgang Von Hagen, 1947, University of Oklahoma, on E-Bay for about ten bucks. He was one heck of a guy, and the book would be great for kids. It is a GREAT read. Preferably, to fully appreciate it, the reader should have first read the two volumes of the travels of Stephens and Catherwood in Mexico, Yucatan, and Central America. For a couple of hundred bucks, I bought a really good library of books on E-Bay about the Maya. Buen Suerte! sacc3850
