Auto Import

We have a truck on my husband's fm3 and are now bring down our Honda CRV on my fm3. The catch is I am still in NH working full time so it is tough for me to be the one bringing it over the border. I am thinking of getting my sticker by mail (I've read this is possible and my husband did it last time) and making a copy of our marriage license and sending him off to try and bring it over? His name is on the Honda Registration, our last names are different, but he would have the Marriage certificate. Anyone had luck doing this?
Thanks in advance you can post me directly at theotherhollyhunter@gmail.com.

I know you´re not the same Holly Hunter but Dawg is in love with Holly Hunter so I have to try to help.

I can´t answer your question about your precise problem but can tell you of our experience at Nuevo Laredo.

We are FM-2 holders but were at the time of this incident FM-3 holders. When we moved to Mexico in 2001, I drove a 1995 California plated Ford Ranger and my wife drove a 2000 California plated Chrysler and I imported the Ranger while she imported the Chrysler. In 2003 or so, I drove the Chrysler (which was too low slung for many Mexican towns) to Nuevo Laredo where I exported it and drove it into Laredo to sell it to a used car dealer. Well, the reputable dealer I had planned to sell it to would not buy it because when they checked with the California DMV they were told there were delinquent registration fees and penalties since I had failed to tell the Califnia DMV we had moved to Mexico. Now, the Texas DMV told me that was hogwash and California had no lien rights over that Chrysler but that didn´t matter as the used car dealer said they simply would not buy any car with any questions about current registration for and reason. So, rather than sell the car to some thieving local used car dealer for a cancellable bank draft, I decided to drive back to Lake Chapala with the car and just keep the thing for the time being.

Well, when I tried to drive back into Mexico, the first thing they asked me was where the Ford Ranger I had imported was and I told them it was at Lake Chapala so - get this - they would not let me re-import the Chrysler which my wife had imported and I had exported since their records showed that the Ranger I had imported three years before was still in Mexico. I was flabbergasted and asked if I could have my wife contact them and make a legal representation of any kind that , while I had imported the truck, she would take over responsibility for it and they flatly refused even to talk about any solution except one. My wife had to come to Nuevo Laredo and re-import the car in person. Period. No further discussion and no alternative solution so my wife had to take a bus from Guadalajara to Nuevo Laredo and personally go to the agency and physically re-import the car since under no circumstances could I import any other vehicle as long as that Ranger was in Mexico. So I got to spend two nights in a hotel while she got to Nuevo Laredo and did the paperwork.

This is not your precise situation but I wanted to warn you that these people would accept no solution other than my wife´s physical presence in Nuevo Laredo to re-import the Chrysler. Just be aware of the nightmare we went through but that´s not all:

My wife forgot to bring a credit card so the only way for her to post the required bond to re-import the Chrysler was to come up with the equivalent of $400USD in cash and the catch is that when they take a credit card one does not ever have to take the car out of Mexico as long as one´s FM-3 is current and the card will never be charged but if one posts a cash bond then they will keep that money if you stay in Mexico beyond the required time period of time allowed which I believe is something like six months although I´m not sure of that.

Good luck to you as you will need it.
