Asylum in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
Does anyone here know where a person can get help with applying for Asylum in Mexico.

I would like to know the process, any abagados that may be of assistance, how one may approach INS to apply for asylum.

I have searched this forum through and through and the only topics covered are when Mexicans seek asylum elsewhere (ie: US or Canada)... not the other way around.

Thank you kindly!

Only the sub-secretario (el encargado de imigration) en D.F. can grant Asylum and it is rarely given.

For refuge (including political refuge), you should contact the Comisión Mexicana de Ayuda de Refugiados (COMAR). The legal discussion I found looks like it might be out of date, I don't know where surebought gets the idea that political asylum is rare, in that this country has always been known for it, and at various points in the last century (during the Fascist era in Spain and during WWII, during the "dirty wars" in South America, during the civil wars in Central America) Mexico was an important refuge for the politically persecuted (even a few U.S. draft evaders were given asylum during the Vietnam War).

Sure they let a lot of people in during the Spanish Civil war, but lately nobody really needs to go the political asylum route, because legal papers are so easy to get. I worked for four years without papers because they weren't giving FM3s when I first came here. What I meant was that official political asylum is hard because all the people from Central America would inundate Mexico with asylum claims. If you are so unsure of my information try it yourself and see if its so easy.

@richmx2 - Thank you for the very helpful guidance you have provided, especially the UNAM PDF which really does cover what I am looking for. Fantastico.

The link to COMAR helps tremendously too, and it is in English (still working on my Spanish), so even more helpful!

The general info surebought gave - when I searched and searched for a website - came up with nothing as far as results... nothing direct to the source of where one would go, as far as an official government website here.

It does appear, after reviewing the statistics COMAR provides on their site, that on average, over the past ten years, nearly 25% of applicants are granted refugee status (however not sure if Asylum status is included in these figures).

The UNAM literature also states that if one applies for asylum but is not approved, that the Mexican government will likely grant them a different status as an immigrant, reflective of each individual situation. So that is hopeful for anyone looking at asylum or refugee status in Mexico.

The laws here are very interesting to learn about, indeed.

Much appreciated. Gracias!
