Anybody know about birds?

Not sure if I should post this in "south Mexico" forum maybe. Moderator feel free to move it :) But thought somebody who lived here would know what is the english name for a bird referred to here as a Pepe. It makes that sound. Pe Pe Pe Pe super loud. Very large faded-black bird, plummage on underside a bit more dark grey than sheer black, about a foot long, maybe slightly more including a long tail, with a med-long orange beak. Legs are black with a yellowish tinge. Looks sorta like a crow. Fearless curious animals. Oaxaca-Veracruz, tropical area. Can anybody identify? This guy likes to knock on the window and sometimes brings his friends.

I'm pretty sure it's a brown jay (Cyanocorax morio) --- the Wikipedia article on Brown Jays (which range along the Gulf from Texas to Panamá and are lighter underneath the further south one goes) describes their voice as "a loud but low pitched pee-ah call and is often modified to suit its situation or mood". Perhaps you heard the word as "Pepe" or perhaps that's a local name.

Roger Tory Peterson's "Birds of Mexico" (my copy is at the bookstore here in Mazatlán, because we have tourists wanting to consult it, or rent it -- and they do!) isn't always complete, sometimes not having birds also found in the United States. Serious birders should get both the Birds of Mexico and the Birds of Texas.

I believe You´re right!!!! I checked that link and it has some others with the bird call, exactly the same voice. My husband thought this one visiting us was a baby, because it acts so silly. The web pages describe the young birds as having the orange beak like this one. Well how bout that? Thanks!!!
