A whole new tourism opportunity opening up?

Wow, hadn't thought of it, but with the Federal District passing a same-gender marriage bill earlier today, why should Mexico City get the honeymoon traffic from folks when they get around to tying the knot?

Mexico City may not have a tropical beach, but then again, Iowa and New Hampshire are hardly what one would call "romantic" (unless you want to go skiing, no one in their right mind goes to New Hampshire in the winter, and no one in their right mind goes to Iowa... ever). Hey, Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta), Quintana Roo (Cancún) and Sinaloa (Mazatlán) are missing out on a great opportunity to reinvigorate the tourist trade.

I am not certain, but I think the prior domestic partner law required residence in DF. Not sure if the new law has this requirement.

As far as I know, "marriage" in one state is valid in all states. I haven't heard of any challenges to Coahuila's "civil solidarity" law, which went into effect in February 2007 and is de facto same-gender marriage. The first couple to receive a license were from Matamoros. was working as a reporter in west Texas at the time, and remember the couple from Odessa who travelled to Saltillo to legalize their household relationship ... but whether a "Civil Solidarity" will be recognzied as a valid marriage in the United States was something I never did learn.
