A cry for help!

I have undertaken the daunting task of starting a library in my children´s elementary school with the help of one other mother! We have a nice space in this little school, but no books! We are located in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, and would love any input whatsoever on how to get books donated locally or internationally. We have a small to non-existent English department, but books in English are super welcomed! I would like to stay away from monetary donations if at all possible, so used or new books for elementary aged kids are what we are looking for.

We have had some positive response from local businesses, but it is minimal. There seems to be a local Tuxtla Radio Station that helps out as well, but again, very minimal. So, in short any ideas on book-raising would be great. Thanks, Joanna

Contact the Merida English Library and ask if they have any extra children's books that they will donate to your library. [meridaenglishlibrary@hotmail.com] If they will donate the books I will contact a friend who leads a tour from Merida to The Canyon and on to San Cristobal. I cannot answer for her but I am almost positive she would be happy to meet you. If you get a commitment from either Harriet or Reg at MELL about the books you can private message me here at Mexconnect and I will pick them up and get them to Joanna Rosada (check out her book being advertised here on Mexconnect). She will be in your area in March or February next year.

Tell MELL that Charlotte or Greg will pick up the books and see that they get to you.

Tourists love to bring books so if you can work with an agency that does tours you can have books in no time.

Good idea about the library, will do that locally as well. Fantastic idea about the tourist, I will have to cry for help to my friends in San Cristobal who know tour agents. Both great ideas, thanks so much. I will get right onto those contacts.
