911 sometimes works here

As I start preparing for an article for my Tech Talk column for the Guadalajara Reporter which won't be out for two weeks, I titled the article, "911 wont work here". And it didn't used to work here, lakeside.

I'm in Ajijic. And just to make sure this was still the case, I picked up my cell phone and dialed 911, knowing full well that no one would pick up at the other end because when calling for help the cell phone emergency # is 088 and for Telmex you dial either the number of the police office of the town you are in or 066.

Well guess what? I was wrong. when I dialed 911, the ring tone I heard sounded like a US ring-tone but the person who picked up the phone stated in Spanish, that she was the emergency operator. You should have heard me trying to say I was sorry in my rapid but not always correct Spanish.

Rather than trying 911 on a land-line, I think I will go to the Telmex office and get them to try it for me, Monday. Has anyone had any other experience with dialing 911 in Mexico?

Thanks in advance for your comments. I guess I should have posted this in the Tech Forum rather than here. But many more of us read this forum than the other. And I am wondering if anyone else could add anything to what I just discovered.

It would be pretty trivial for your phone or phone provider to simply do a call redirect.
