6 months in one year only?

If I stay in Mexico for four months this winter, then go home (Canada) and come back in a few months, is that allowed?

Is the actual time I can spend in Mexico limited to 6 months in a calendar year? Is that how it works? Thanks!

When you enter Mexico on the FMT visa you are allowed to stay 180 days. When you leave Mexico you must relinquish the visa. Each time you enter you get a new FMT, the "tourist" visa, good for 180 days each time. There are other visas with different requirements and restrictions.

The requirements for Canadian citizens living abroad are based on Canada's rules for health insurance coverage. As a Canadian, you are required actually to live in Canada for 6 months plus one day in order to continue to be covered under the national health insurance. So you can be in Mexico for 6 months MINUS one day and in Canada for 6 months PLUS one day and still be covered.

This is, of course, separate and apart from the FMT/FM3 visas as required by the Mexican government.

Esperanza, do you think my Canadian coverage is enough for Mexico? I was planning on supplementing it with some private "out of country" insurance... for emergencies at least...

thanks for your help!

You will need to ask your Canadian insurance provider what is covered before you come to Mexico. Or perhaps someone on the foros who is Canadian and covered as you are will have the answer for you.

Are you from Ontario? Or BC? You should check with health care system. We're from Alberta and I know that foreign travel insurance is not covered by Alberta Health Care. We need to have additional medical insurance for our stay in Mexico. We buy our travel insurance from the AMA. It'd the best price we've found. If you get sick, you have to phone the medical insurance company and tell them before you even see a doctor in Mexico. Otherwise your coverage is cancelled. Eventually the cost is shared by the additional medical insurance company and your provincial coverage. The medical insurance company bills the provincial health care for you and they share the cost.

Thanks! I'm from BC... will check with the provider.

I used to get great out of country coverage from BCAA, for traveling in the USA... I will check with them also :)

in April of this year BCAA travel insurance was the most reasonable . Their rates for a one year multi-trip with a pre existing condition was under 130 dollars and for my husband the single trip, no pre existing condition was very much cheaper.
