Here in Lerdo we hit an all-time low last night 17°F, -8°C.
Frozen pipes, so no water. In fact, it looks like the whole town is without water.

We've found one ruptured pipe in the bathroom. Thank goodness there's a cutoff valve in front of the break.
T thought I had left all this behind when I moved from Boston to Los Angeles.
I never dreamed I'd be fighting frozen pipes in México.

I'm sitting here bundled up in all my winter gear, and I'm still cold.
I think I'll go back to bed. Oh, I forgot. I woke up eary today because I was cold.
I brought in the dogs' water dish to thaw the ice, so they coulld have a drink before it froze again.

Let's hear it for climate change!

It's not that cold here, in the Pátzcuaro, Michoacán area. It's gradually warming up enough so we don't have to sleep in long underwear and use two thermal blankets and a quilt.

Now, 1:26 PM, I''m wearing a short sleeved shirt and we have the windows open.

Still, I wouldn't describe it as tropical warmth.

In the early morning, it's the same as outside.
As the day warms up, it will be colder in the house.
Right now (1:30), it's 34° outside.
Inside my house, it's still colder than inside the fridge.

Rolly:

Just be thankful that you were not on a trip NOB. El Paso & Juarez were colder than Anchorage, Alaska the other day. Texas was so short on power that they had to buy excess power from Mexico. Too bad that they cannot charge the Texans the higher CFE rates.

Is the really cold weather that's blasting through the US pushing all the way to your location? Yowza, that's cold.

Here at Lake Chapala, this winter seems much warmer to me last year. Sorry, but you did ask.

Water is a bigger problem than the cold. No water for the dogs, cooking, washing up, or flushing the toilet.
Bottled water is sold out at the stores.
Looks like we may not have a thaw in the water system until tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.
Thankfully, we still have electricity. And no snow or ice.

42F in Kino
-5 C in Santiago NL
29 in South Padre TX

They offered to transmit 280 mWatts of power then rescinded the offer the next day due to their own shortages from the cold.

Did you ever wonder why there are even grid connections crossing the border? Integrating the electrical markets has been ongoing for some time and power has been routinely imported/exported back and forth to alleviate supply fluctuations. The electrons flow both ways. Pricing agreements are already in place. Mexico has been selling power to Southern California since the late 90's. California is happy to get the power, Mexico is happy to get the revenue.

For this time of year, it's been a little cool in Mexico City the last few days because it's been cloudy, with the result that there's little sunshine to warm things up nicely during the day. Today the high is 23 degrees C. and tonight it's supposed to go down to 8. We are at 7350 feet above sea level, by the way.

Turnabout; it gets cold after sundown, then typically warms up about 9 or 10 a.m.

The last week has been improving. We no longer see frost on the grass outside when we awake.

My disposition has improved because we now have water -- sort of.
The freeze killed our pressure pump. This afternoon the main pipes thawed enough that we were able to open the pump bypass valve and get street water directly to our houses, but the pressure is dismally low -- enough for drinking and flushing, but not for a shower. We hope to get the pressure pump replaced tomorrow (Saturday).

We expect another freeze tonight, so we'll leave the water running in the hope that will keep the pipes from freezing again.

Here in La Paz, temperatures aren't that cold (low was 46F/8C yesterday), but strong winds all day and night made it feel much colder, especially in our drafty unheated homes. A friend and I went out for breakfast, and the restaurant felt like a subway station in Boston January. I had three layers on at home and slept in my clothes.

I am happy to report that there has not been a frost at my house in Guanajuato Capital in 9 years. I know, I have over 75 potted plants outside. Furthermore, the temperature inside my house has remained between 63° F. and 78° F. for the same 9 years, day and night, summer and winter, with the norms being more like 66° to 74° F. One side note is that my house has 2 inch Styrofoam panels embedded into the cement walls.

Saturday afternoon update: Temps are scheduled to stay above freezing begining tonight.
We should be back to normal winter days (80s in the afternoon) by Tuesday.
We're still on street water with very low pressure. Delays in fixing our pressure pump -- maybe Monday, I hope.
We tried, unsuccessfully, to fix the pump. By the time we gave up and went to buy a new one, they were all sold.
The big freeze ruined a lot of pumps.

39F/4C when I got up this morning. Even my dog has been sleeping inside his crate (indoors). Those of us who live here are out in jeans, sweats, jackets, even boots and knitted hats, but I saw a couple of tourists walking around in shorts and flipflops. In case there was any doubt, people's built-in thermostats really do vary widely.

We've been really suffering here at Lake Chapala. 84F high, 43F low. The indecision about whether or not it's cold enough to wear a long-sleeved shirt is killing me. Help!

Kate ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here, near Puerto Vallarta, it's been darn cold every morning when taking my dog for his walk. I'm wearing a hooded sweatshirt, jeans, and woolly socks all day long. The inside of the house doesn't warm up at all during the day, even though the sun peeks out occasionally. We locals certainly get strange looks from the tourists, clad in shorts and tank tops. You're so right about our built-in thermostats. The explanation I got some years ago is: the farther south towards the tropics we live, the thinner our blood gets over time. I've been here year round for 11 years. When I return to Canada, even in July and August, I freeze there too.

Here in northern México, the cold has damaged more than the plumbing.
Lerdo is called the "Garden City" because of its many tree lined streets, lush parks and numerous nurseries.
This cold wave has devastated those. Today's paper is reporting the loss of 50,000 plants and trees in Lerdo alone.

Near Juarez where it was even colder, 35 animals froze to death in a zoo after electrical power was lost.
"Serengeti Zoo owner Alberto Hernandez says 14 parrots, 13 serpents, five iguanas, two crocodiles and a capuchin monkey died. He said Saturday that power failures cut off electrical heating at the zoo in the town of Aldama."

Rolly, that is soooo sad. Here in PV, the SPCA has been begging for extra blankets and heaters, saying that small puppies are close to dying because of the cold. I do hope you and your critters are going to be cozy tonight.
