tianguis y mercados de Guadalajara

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have finally managed to schedule 8 days to explore Guadalajara beginning tomorrow, Sept. 3. Please, anyone who can, please tell me when and where to find the most and best tianguis and the best markets, and any information which you could give me about them. And of course I will want to try to find the most economical and practical means of transportation from condos Plaza del Sol where I will be staying. Thank you.

I would have to reccommend that you visit the tianguis in Tonala on Sunday or Thursday. There, you will find an extremely wide array of Mexican artesanias at very low prices. You can definitely haggle over prices, and you will almost always win, within reason.

The Mercado Libertad is so huge that it's overwhelming but so incredibly exotic and exciting that it's not to be missed. Especially the shrimp cocktails. Our only mistake was ordering the chica...we should have gotten the GRANDE!! and we will..next time!

If you have not been there yet , go to the Abastos off Lazaro Cardenas for produce: it is the central wholesale produce market for Guadalajara . This is where most stores and markets get their produce from. There is a decent spice store / market called la gallena felix. You can also go to the wholesale fish market in Zapopan called Mercado del Mar and have lunch there. The buyers go there early in the morning and the action is about over at 11 oclock in the morning. They sell retail in both places as well.

If you're interested in pottery and dinnerware, be sure to take a cab to what is now the suburb of Tonala (Guadalajara gobbled the town up) where the Ken Edwards factory is located--if you buy seconds, flaws indetectable to my eye, you can save a bunch on his very expensive, very beautiful dinnerware.

And Tlaquepaque is nearby, another artists' haven, but the prices aren't as good as in Tonala. Frommer's says there are 400 crafts shops in Tonala, and I believe it.

I think Ken Edwards has a website if you're interested in seeing the kind of stuff he sells. A single dinner plate ordered on the internet is something like $45 US. We got a very complete set for six with many serving pieces for around $300 total, and they shipped it unbroken to San Miguel.

Thanks to everyone. I found the places and enjoyed them enough to spend more than I could afford. And Luis, I want to especially than you for your friendship and your gracious hospitality. I can never think of Guadalajara without thinking of Estimado Luis Dumois. I have been reading your very helpful postings for 8 years and am always impressed by your generosity to people who are interested in Guadalajara.

Now I am trying to decide whether to buy the pig at Tonalá. It is of pottery/clay type material (I forgot the name but it may be barro) and is a barbecue hibachi about 3 feet long. As you know, I cannot speak Spanish beyond a few nouns, and the the tianqui vendor does not speak english. He told me it could be packed in a wooden crate and the transportation would cost about 250 pesos (I could understand that much) but he mentioned Nuevo Laredo several times. This could mean that he was talking about just the cost of shipping to there, or he could have been saying that his company would ship the item from Nuevo Laredo to my home in Arkansas.

If I can learn the cost of the shipping and it is not too expensive, and if there is a reasonable likelihood of the pig arriving at my home intact, I want to go to Tonalá this afternoon and buy it. Can you help?

Muchas Gracias desde Plaza del Sol.

Buy the pig but pack it yourself. Over the last 20 years I've had things sent many, many time--but I've had very mixed luck. Barro is pretty soft terra cotta--I don't think it would hold up unless it is packed exceptionally well.
