rental car

My wife and I will be staying at the Palma Real in Manzanillo in May. To be able to see more of the country we were thinking of flying into PV, renting a car and driving to Manzanillo. At the end of our week at the hotel, we hope to rent a home or condo for another week and then drive to Guadalajara and fly out of there. Will the rental agencys allow you to pick up a car at one airport and drop it off at another.

Yes, drop-offs are allowed by many rental companies. But the drop off charge is usually VERY large. This is because drop-offs are not common, so it will cost the company money to relocate the car.

A high drop-off charge on top of what is already an expensive rental may be a shocker.

Thanks for that info Rolly, maybe I'll just use a local agency in Manzanillo and then take the bus to Guad.

Good move in my opinion. The drive from Manzanillo is not as scenic as you might think---miles of the same winding roads, much of it through wooded or jungly areas. Two lanes for the majority of the distance. The plusses are that you're following the coastline and there are a number of small unspoiled seaside villages to visit, pristine beaches in many areas, and good country people to visit.

And the bus ride from Manzanillo to Guad is not really as harrowing as the one from PV to Guad.

Look at David Ramsey's website about his book on the area at www.costalegre.com. Good pictures and descriptions of the villages and beaches of the Costalegre between Manzanillo and PV.

In Manzanillo there'a a good car rental agency by the tire shop close to the Soriana store. Or at the airport.

For a nice day trip drive up to Melaque and Barra de Navidad, then an extra 15 miles or so to La Manzanilla. 45 minutes to an hour from Manzanillo through some nice farm and ranch country to some small fishing villages. Basically an easier trip but with most of the type of scenery you'll find on up toward PV.

Enjoy.

I think we'll defintely make that trip up to La Manzanilla after reading your post. I appreciate you telling me about David Ramsey's site.

I noticed on your profile that you reside in Lakeside. Last year we spent the most wonderful week in Aijici during September. The highlight of the trip was walking downtown to enjoy the "el grito" celebration. It was amazing to see so many people in one place, all happy and having a good time without any problems. We were staying at the Nuevo Posada and around 11:00 p.m. we walked back to the hotel. Under no circumstances would we ever be walking our streets that late in our neighborhood much less in another country! I'm sure Aijici has it's share of problems, but we just felt safe.

Hope all you ex-pats are enjoying Thanksgiving today.

Thanks again for suggestions.

Mike,

Wrong address for the book---try www.costalegre.net. Also www.tomzap.com for info about Melaque, Barra, and La Manzanilla.

Read my article about the turtle rescuers to get the phone number for the former mayor of Melaque. He might be a good person to talk with if you're interested in conservation matters.
