Once you have had your FM 2 for five years and you apply for Mexican Citizenship do you have to renounce your U.S citizenship? When you become a Mexican Citizen can you vote? Do you then have dual citizenship?[reply]

No, and in fact the US Department of State's standard of administrative evidence for the loss of US citizenship is at least in my opinion quite high.

ET's given you the answer. For more, please use the "search posts" function, where you'll find even more about this topic.

Naturalization is not tied to the FM-2. The FM-2 is an immigration status.

The National Immigration Institute of Mexico (INAMI) http://www.inami.gob.mx is the agency charged with issuance of visas and migratory forms, determining policies and procedures for all Mexican Embassies and Consulates throughout the world. Its authority is derived from the Ley General de Población http://info4.juridicas.unam.mx/...d/146/default.htm?s=.

Mexico does allow dual citizenship.

The Ley de Nacionalidad http://www.sre.gob.mx/...eydenacionalidad.htm is the governing legislation for naturalization, vesting authority in the Secretary of Exterior Relations (SRE) http://www.sre.gob.mx. In 2003, 2150 letters of naturalization were issued.

Naturalized Mexican citizens enjoy the right to vote, but application for voting credential must first be made to IFE http://www.ife.gob.mx.
