medicare now available parts of Mexico?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I will be eligible for Medicare in 6 months. Yesterday I received a packet of options for supplements. Under original medicare it states "You are covered throughout the US plus parts of Mexico and Canada." I have never heard of this. Does anyone else know anything about it?

Ms Mac, here's a website that gives some information about the study that is or was being done by the University of Texas. I don't know where the study stands at the moment; you'd probably do better to call or write someone connected with Medicare to have your questions answered.

I'll let you guys know as soon as I find out something. Remember, though, we're dealing with the US government.

About a year ago I researched that question for an article I was writing. http://www.mexconnected.com/...jrforeignplaces.html The sun may never set on the community of Social Security retirement beneficiaries around the planet, but Medicare respects national boundaries that render it useless outside of the United States. And that means that retirees abroad aren’t covered unless they return to American shores. 42 U.S.C. §1395y((a)(4).

Knowing the answer, I decided to have a little fun with the Medicare people and their on-line Q&A system. "Oh, yes, retirees living abroad are covered under Medicare. That has always been the law."

Since when? Does that mean that they're covered for health care services obtain in Mexico?

"Oh, yes. They're covered in New Mexico."

No. Mexico. The Country.

"They are covered. They are covered for health care services rendered in the U.S."

That means an old, crippled, on-his-deathbed, Medicare beneficiary who lives in Mexico has to travel to the U.S. to receive services under Medicare?

"Yes."

There is a very, very narrow carveout which provided for coverage in Mexican and Canadian health care facilities when those were closer to a recipient's home than a U.S. facility. This involves those in remote areas of the border.

I'm just doing a test post. Your last post seems to be two pages wide. Take a look at it and make sure that it isn't only me.

Long, unbroken strings, such as URLs, will force the page wider. Nothing can be done about it. Just a curse of the computer gods.

Like the website said, "you may be covered in Mexico" but according to a friend who does medical billing here in Mazatlan, there is a VERY narrow set of covered procedures. She has also told me that there are a few pilot programs, in Mexico that have been sanctioned by the US government. I've been trying to get more information but so far, I haven't gotten anything other than hearsay. When I do find out, I'll post here.

Some Medicare Supplement Plan choices have a Foreign Travel Benefit. This benefit will pay medical expenses incurred out of the USA for trips of up to 60 days in length if the medical problem is not a problem that is expected as part of a pre-existing condition. (

i.e.) If one has diabetes and goes into insulin shock, they would reimburse you for the expenses you paid to doctors, hospitals, etc. Why? Because it was a pre-existing condition, but it was not an expected that you would have an insulin shock. If one went abroad with a broken leg in a cast and had the cast removed at the recommended time of 4 weeks after the break, that is not covered because you knew that it was due, it was an expected happening.

If you set foot in the USA on the 60th day and turn right around and leave again you are on a new 60 day period of coverage. One could do this year in and year out.

This coverage does not just pay the percentage that Medicare would normally not pay. It covers that whole expense, as I understand it.

Mix this with a good medical evacuation plan and one could patch together a somewhat inconvenient, but pretty much total coverage as it happens in the USA. If you have medical issues, it is worth the effort.

It would be more fun if Medicare simply covered retirees in Mexico. However, everyone knows how our politicians are sitting up nights sweating nails to insure that all Medicare eligible citizens receive only the best level of medical care and the purest pharmaceutical prescriptions that political willpower can deliver.

I think Medicare will be available in Mexico when the US provider industry has service outlets in Mexico.

Did finally get hold of medicare. All they said was that it would cover in emergencies but they decide what constitutes an emergency. Doesn't sound too promising does it? Sorry for not responding sooner. Had some server problems on my computer.
