I have to drive my foreign plated car out of mexico. the car has been in Mexico for many years and unfortunately I cannot find the paper permit. I still have the sticker on the windshield. What should I do??? I understand I need this permit to get the temporary passage papers (I forget the proper name) to drive to the border....:(

Hi dstan,
The procedure for canceling a TIP without the paper copy is straightforward, but takes 4 - 5 hours. Bring a book?

When you have lost your paper copy of the TIP, you go to the Banjercito office at a border crossing, and take a letter describing (in Spanish) that you have lost your "Permiso de importación temporal de vehiculo", but the car still has its windshield sticker. Include your car's VIN, make, model, and year information, plus your name as on your passaporte, and copies of your passport and the vehicle's title and registration, plus include your current INM NUE number and INM permit type, and the ID number of the TIP. Further explain that you want to cancel/surrender the current TIP, and that you... also want a new TIP?

Have the originals of the US/Canadian registration, the title, your passport, your current INM card, and copies of each of these things. Banjercito will search their database for your old record, and they will verify the validity of your VIN and the old TIP sticker. Once they have finished their validations (inspecting your car), they send you to an Aduana supervisor or perito. The supervisor/perito inspects your documents.... mysterious things happen behind closed doors (or upstairs at the Subteniente López crossing near Chetumal) for at least 2 hours. In the 2 times I have assisted friends with this, we found: They may bring you forms to sign. They may ask for other documentation. They may ask clarifying questions (in Spanish). As you visit with other people in the waiting area who are also waiting for atypical things, a total of 4 -6 hours can pass. (Maybe the Aduana office staff eat a nice lunch as you wait ? )

Anyway, at the end of the process, they give you some final papers to sign, and you then go to Banjercito to finish the transaction, with Banjercito removing the sticker - or asking you to remove the sticker. It is almost guaranteed that other Mexconnectors have had slightly different experiences with Aduana when cancelling lost TIPs, with the individual steps varying somewhat at each Aduana office , but it still seems to take at least 4 hours of special processing by an Aduana specialist.

Come back and tell us how it went.

Hapy Trails,
steve

PS It goes a little more smoothly if the person who got the original TIP files these requests, in person. It can be done with a separate Power of Attorney (Carta de Poder), authorizing your agent to act on your behalf, but that adds other steps to the process.

Thanks very much for your detailed reply. The only problem is that I will need a Returno Seguro in order to get to the border...and in order to get the RS I need that printed portion of my TIP , which is what I don't have.
Do you, or anyone else reading this, have a suggestion of how I can remedy
this situation while still inside the country?

A Feb 13, 2013 Aduana presentation in Nueva Vallarta wrote:
In case your permit is no longer valid, you may apply for a “Safe Return Permit” for your car before the Administración Central de Grandes Contribuyentes in Mexico City, located at Hidalgo #77 modulo III, planta baja, Colonia Guerrero, Delegación Cuauhtémoc, México D.F., By sending the following documentation via courier service: A letter declaring under penalty of perjury that the vehicle is your property, that is not involved in any Legal, Civil or Administrative procedure in relation to Customs Law ( PAMA); by attaching the following: Copy of the property title. Copy of your immigartion form. Copy of offical valid ID. Originals of the Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit and hologram sticker.

That last item points to you needing to check with your local SAT/Hacienda office to ask for their guidance.

Aduana's web page on this: “Safely Returning Autos - Retorno Seguro”
