gonna buy me a Mercury and cruz it up and down the road

A recent story in the Colorado Springs Gazette highlited the practice of smuggling cars into Mexico illegaly. Mexicans from the border state go to auto auctions in the USA: Colorado Springs, New York and even Atlanta. They are not buying your typical 3 year old lease return, but rather what we in Canada call beaters. Cars that barely run. They then tow these to the border and pay a chicano $25.00 to drive it across . Apparently there are vacant lots in Juarez full of these junkers. The people who go to the auctions are called a "tovarero". Isn't Mexican entrepeneurship amazing? Find a void and they will fill it! BTW, the article claims that as many as 1000 illegal cars cross the border every day!! Now comes the contest of the day. If any of you can tell me who sang the lyrics in my subject line I will mail you a genuine Sonoran Burro with your choice of toppings. HINT: It wasnt Donnie Osmond. And Allan Jackson doesnt count.

I rent a commercial building to a Mexican and the parking lot kept getting full of used pick ups. Juan told me that it was legal to buy those and take them to Mexico if they were over a certain age and ther were no problems.

Features found on these pickups:

Failed smog test
Cracked windshield
expired US plates
wrecked
rusted
leaking vital fluids

Any combination of these characteristics make the vehicle undesireable and impractical for use in the US, though it may have plenty of useful working life left. In the US we say "drag it away please, before I have to pay a tow truck to take it", and there you go.
