have not heard of any travel restrictions, you can always check the cdc website, however; if travel restrictions were put in place, i am quite confident it would be all over the news.

I live in Mexico City, and the only way the situation's affected me is that with all the museums closed, I have to think of something else to do tomorrow! Of course, I am concerned and am avoiding very crowded areas of the city (like the Centro Hístorico) and am washing my hands more than usual.

I live in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico and am currently visiting a friend in Mexico City--I've been here since Thursday. What I see is that many people are wearing surgical masks on the various kinds of public transportation, as well as on the street. What I also see is that all schools, universities, and public cultural and sporting events have been closed to the public. A concert at Bellas Artes that I was to have attended as been canceled, as was a previously planned private tour of a University museum. However, all stores, movie theaters, restaurants, etc, appear to be up and running.

The army is handing out free paper masks in the Centro Historico. I would say that two out of five people on the street are wearing masks. One taxi driver today told me, "Esta cosa no sirve. Solo sirve para calentarme el hosico." (This thing [the mask] is useless. It just makes my mouth hot.) Another taxi driver told me that he puts a lot of credence in TV and newspaper reports, but I noticed that he wasn't wearing a mask.

La Isla, PM me and we'll get together tomorrow. My friend and I are going to La Lagunilla to hunt for treasure. Come along!

Are you and your friends wearing masks, Esperanza?

We'll be arriving in Mexico City on Tuesday.

(I'd read somewhere else—El Universal, perhaps— that the restaurants and bars would be closed. I called our hotel and they said that their restaurant was open.
After all, you have to eat to stay healthy. Your report is encouraging.)

A friend traveling this morning on ETN from Puerto Vallarta to Irapuato told me ETN is giving all passengers paper masks to wear. He also said no one was wearing them.

I tried to buy surgical masks today at several pharmacies in Ajijic and at Wal-Mart. They were all sold out. Why did I try to buy them, 1.) to wear as a practical joke tomorrow morning for breakfast at the local Salvador's Restaurant, and 2.) just it case it's more serious than we all hope, so I could wear one when flying North next week.

I found a paint mask I can wear tomorrow for my practical joke; sadly all of the real surgical masks have been purchased. I sure hope I wont need one.

That´s cute, Pete.

So, tell me. When we fly to Paris from Guadalajara in a couple of weeks are we to amuse ourselves with paper masks for the approximately 20 hours or so we will be exposed in second class to the 400 peabrains we never met before and hopefully will never meet again?

That airplane reminds me of Betty Sue Johnson back in Wetumpka who never met a football player she didn´t love. In that airplane you never know who was in there before you but unlike Betty Sue, at least you know who is there with you and that may or may not be to your liking.

Can you imagine wearing a surgical mask for only two hours, the time of my flight from GDL to Dallas? I sure hope that by the time you leave for Europe that everything has calmed down. Doesn't the flu season normally end in April?

I sure hope so.

You'll want to monitor the news, Anonimo. Depending on whether they can control the contagion, DF officials are talking about shutting down all activities in the Distrito Federal, beginning Monday night or Tuesday morning.

A translated (by me) snip of the linked article from El Universal:

Activities could be totally suspended in DF
The head of the capitol district government, Marcelo Ebrard, said that if the flu cases do not ease up, they could suspend public transport service

Notimex
El Universal
México City, Sunday, April 26, 2009

The head of the Distrito Federal government, Marcel Ebrard, said that the total suspension of activities in the city would depend on whether they were able to get control over the cases of swine flu and the number of deaths.

In a radio interview, he explained that if they suspended activities to reduce the possibility of contagion, the decision would come Monday night or Tuesday morning, depending on the results they get.

Thanks for that update, Kenhjr. Our airline, Continental, is offering penalty free changes of scedules for those going to or leaving from Mexico City. However, as of this morning, our flight on the 30th of April was not among those included.

We were able to buy masks and anti bacterial handwipes in Patzcuaro this morning.
All generalities are suspect, including this one.

  Hi everyone,

My name is Vivian Song and I'm a national reporter for Sun Media in Toronto. I'm following up on the swine flu outbreak in Mexico and am hoping to speak to a Canadian expat living in Mexico City or surrounding area to tell us what's happening down there. Is it overblown, akin to the SARS outbreak in Toronto or is the panic widespread?
If you call me at 416-947-2341 I'll call you back on my dime. I can also be reached at vivian.song@sunmedia.ca
Hope to hear from you soon,
Vivian
