did not turn in FMM, what now?

I did not turn in my FMM when I left Mexico. How do I avoid problems or surprises when I visit next time?

Background: I entered Mexico at Tecate on Jan 10. I traveled to Loreto then returned to the US at San Luis Rio Colorado on Jan 19. It was my 6th trip to mexico but was my 1st by land at a border crossing. I was used to the airline agent taking my form and was caught unaware when I reached US Immigration and still had it.
