I am thinking of buying a cellphone for use over a 4 month stay in the Yucatan, but I need to know if the communication service providerin the Yucatan, TelCel, uses GSM or CDMA technology. My local sources here don't know and I have been unsuccessful in trying to track down info on the 'net. Any info and or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going to be doing the same thing. TELCEL uses the TDMA 800Mhz analog and 1900Mhz system.
You can use almost any phone that is used on Rogers AT&T. The following are all TDMA phones.
Ericsson KF-788 Motorola TalkAbout T8090
Ericsson T18d Motorola TalkAbout T2260
Ericsson A 1228d Motorola M3097
Ericsson DH 668 Motorola Timeport P8097/8190
Nokia 3320 Motorola V2297
Nokia 5120 Motorola V2390
Nokia 5125 Motorola V60
Nokia 5160 Nec 2600
Nokia 6120 Samsung N275
Nokia 6161 Samsung N375
Nokia 8860 Panasonic EB-TX210
Nokia 8260 Panasonic EB-TX310
Motorola Startac 7790 Audiovox TDM-2500
Motorola Startac 7797 / 7980 <p>Depending on your timeframe, check out Ebay.ca and buy a phone there, cheaper than in most stores.
Attacked link has a map and is for Cellphone coverage in Mexico.

I have found the older Motorola's at the Salavation Army and Goodwill...they were running in the $1.00 range for the phone and the charger. I took a shot and bought 2 of them (in case one didn't work)...and brought them to Mexico. I took it to a shop and they installed a $10 phone card in it in about 5 minutes...that gave me a local number which I needed, gave me a phone without the hassle of trying to get one in my apartment...and they bought the 2nd phone from me because they said that the range is so much better than anything that is sold there. Receiving local calls cost me nothing, only when I placed a local call...I used less than $20 all winter long and I used it constantly for my business purposes...the BEST deal in the world!!

For example, I bought a cellphone for 1000 pesos and this included 1000 pesos of free airtime so basically the phone was free. They have different promotions going on all thetime
