There's a Word for It in Mexico: The Complete Guide to Mexican Thought and Culture, by Boyé Lafayette De Mente, published in 1996.

Anybody else read it?

I picked this up in the local library a few days ago. Even while reading the introduction I started arching my eyebrows suspiciously. So far I've only read 50-some pages of it, but every time I turn the page he contradicts something I've read (or thought) previously. That by itself would be okay since it never hurts to examine things.

But I don't trust this writer. Not only is the book poorly written, some of the conclusions he draws based on what appears to be a very shaky grasp of Mexican History strike me as way off base.

Is it just me or is this thing garbage?

"Five Families" by Oscar Lewis is a classic. Anyone considering living in Mexico should read it.

Garbage is too kind a word. Amusingly, or appallingly, much of "There's A Word For It" is -- word for word -- found in De Mente's books on Japan and Korea.

Oscar Lewis' books are very, very good, and very, very important, but remember they were written 50 years ago, and culture as well as cultural attitudes and assumption in Mexico, like everywhere else on the planet, have changed tremendously. I think Octavio Paz´"Sor Juana: or, the traps of faith" is equally important, with the same proviso that culture has changed a bit since the 1640s.

Sorry to disagree-I am a Mexican and have lived with my Mexican family in Guadalajara for 10 years now. The things that happen in our family,in the family of our friends, and the families of our neighbors are as if they had been extracted from the Oscar Lewis book. Continuous battles over money and sex (including incest). It's nothing like the American side of the family.

Maybe that's why telenovellas are so popular here.

Yeah, that's what I thought. (I was being a bit delicate.) This thing is borderline spooky.

In the sense that family issues don't change, yes... and the same holds true for Paz' book on Sor Juana and group dynamics and the role of the public intellectual. But to assume attitudes taken towards issues now is the same as that in the 1950s is a serious mistake.

I admire your knowledge and judgment, Esperanza. But, I have a Mexican friend who teaches Spanish here, and, (at least as of 3 years ago), he recommended that book to all his students! I realize DeMente's books are geared primarily to business people moving to a foreign country, and attempt in a general way to point out cultural differences that could be important in a business situation. But, apparently Héctor thinks that new residents and snowbirds can benefit as well. Would be interested in your comments on this. Dee

Dee, No matter what Hector says, I agree 100% with esperanza. Total trash. There are so many much better and accurate ways to get the correct information, I will not sell DeMente's book to anyone. Yes, there are things that are correct, but what newbie knows what the correct things are to be able to sort them out from all the terrible misinformation?

Folks, this thread has gotten way, way too long. I'm locking it now, but please: it's an excellent topic and worthy of new input about books on Mexico. Please feel free to open a new, similar thread!
