Who Ate What for Christmas Dinner in Mexico ?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Ok . . . . So who ate what for Christmas dinner in Mexico this year? Mexican traditional or American based? My wife was really looking forward to some good wild salmon for her Christmas dinner. Darn that is hard to find these days. Not particularly expensive as things go but difficult to find. She had been asking me for months for it. I finally found it on the computer. http://www.wildpacificsalmon.com/site/680079/page/45031 so I got some shipped to Texas and brought it home to Mexico for her. Quite a surprise. I never did like fresh salmon but I tasted hers which she cooked with a long time Mexican family recipe using some kind of home made mild avocado and lime sauce . . . . boy was I surprised! I think it was all a plot for me to buy more next year! Graced with asparagus, whole green beans and a non alcoholic Mexican Christmas drink I cannot pronounce, instead of wine . . . . . it was great.

Before you ask . . . . . she will not tell me how she cooked it and would not let me in the kitchen to watch her prepare it. I wonder where and how the heck did a Mexican woman (supposedly many years ago) learn how to cook Salmon? This recipe has been in the family for years. Not exactly an easy fish to find in Mexico . . . . especially in years past.

I eat salmon frequently -- at least once a week.
I buy it at Sam's and Soriana. Always in stock.

Hi Rolly,

Merry Christmas to you, When I Come back up to your neighborhood, I would like to let you know and maybe we could meet so I can finally give you that jar of Vlassic Whole Kosher Dills. (Yes, I still have it for you!) We'll call it your before, during and belated Christmas Present! (smiling)

I think if you look closely Rolly, you will see that is "Farm Raised" or "Sustainable" Salmon. It may have a lot of other names but I don’t believe it is "Wild" or "Natural" Salmon. For me I do not see the difference but Jimena says there is. I was in Sam's Club in San Juan del Rio the other day and I saw what I thought was pretty nice looking salmon. My wife showed me something (of course I couldn't see the difference), but she was adamant about it. It was not Wild or Natural.

Then I found this. http://www.bristolbaysalmonco.com/fvw.html

Jimena is very careful when buying foods,, always trying to buy the healthiest.

We had ham, scalloped potatoes, and brussels sprouts. We drank Cava from Spain. BTW, this time of year one can get wild salmon from Chile. Quite good, way better than the farmed Atlantic.

Hello and Merry Christmas to you and to Houndawg,

Hope you guys are having a happy one. Tell that "Southern Boy" I said hi! I miss him here and you too.

I am hoping that Jimena will cook some lamb for New Years Eve. I love a good leg of lamb with a real fresh mint sauce. Sounds like you had a yummy dinner.

Hi David,

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I do love those scalloped potatoes and brussels sprouts! I have just recently heard of the Chilean wild salmon. From what I have been able to read it is supposed to be pretty good. I am not a lover of salmon except for really good Atlantic Smoked wild salmon. Or better yet thinly sliced lox, that just melts in your mouth. Haven't had any of that in a long, long time. I love to just sit and take a small piece of thin sliced good wild smoked lox and slap it up onto the roof of my mouth and let it almost dissolve. That is pretty special. One of God's many gifts!

Maybe I can get the wife to try that Chilean Salmon.

Robert, I am very familiar with wild salmon. In my working years, I had 5 projects in Alaska, so I spent a lot of time there and ate lots of salmon -- much of it fresh, never frozen. The only difference I can discern is that wild salmon fillets tend to be thicker. I can't taste a difference.

As for lunch/dinner on Christmas Eve: About 4:00pm, my students brought home-made pizza and a cake for a Christmas party on my patio. After being over stuffed with pizza and cake, Nery gave me a box of candy and very large sack of cookies his mother made for me. After they left, Enrique, my keeper, brought me a plate of freshly made tamales and another box of candy. I'm sure my blood sugar must be at least 1000 today.

In a few minutes (Christmas morning) I'm going to use the rest of the tamales to make my special tamal vegetable soup. Later today, Nery has promised to bring me a chunk of his mother's wonderful wine infused turkey.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go be sick from too many cookies and candy.

Am I living in the future tense or am I just confused.........are we talking about what we are GOING to eat for Christmas Dinner or what we had yesterday. It is Christmas, isn't it? Oh well.

We had what David had for Christmas Eve and golly gee, was it good! Those escalloped taters were outstanding. Then, like we needed that......pecan pie with ice cream. Groan. Yummmmm!

Today........off to a restaurant to let someone else's kitchen end up a mess.

I feel like I need to live on salad for the next week. Without much dressing. With no cheese.

Family traditions vary. In mine, we celebrated Christmas Eve by opening the gifts and having a light "feast".
Christmas Day dinner was a gathering of relatives: We usually had eight to ten at the table, with turkey as the main dish. It rotated around the family. One year, it was our turn and mom outdid herself, but forgot to put the sugar in the pumpkin pie. Very memorable.

Merry Christmas - Gringal,

Or should I say . . . . . . Happy Boxing Day?

I didn't intend to confuse anyone with the day one should or should not eat their Christmas dinner. As both you and Vichil attest to many different traditional "Christmas Dinners are enjoyed either on the 24th, the eve of Christmas or in fact on the 25th itself, the day of Christmas. Certainly not to left out the Jewish celebrate Chanukah earlier in the month with a different meal and again many wait until the Old Calendar and celebrate on the 7th of January, as did I in Moldova, Tartastan and Russia a few years ago. Not only different dates but also different traditional meals. All are good, and certainly no one time or date, is the correct one for all. Most important is the reason for the celebration and the gathering of family and friends. A time hopefully of peace and good will and remembrances of the reason for the season. Even for those of no particular religious belief, it is still (I think) a special day for family and friends to gather and share.

My initial question was solely an inquiry as to what people enjoyed as their celebratory meal, as I really enjoying learning more and more about what I do not know, especially about cultural differences.

So . . . . . . . . Happy Boxing Day!

We spent a part of our Christmas Eve delivering meals to the state and municipal fire and rescue crews and the Cruz Roja in our area. Unlike the US where fire departments get lots of goodies at Christmas time, these guys are pretty much ignored. We asked friends to chip in and got dinners made at a local restaurant. They had turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, cole slaw, garlic bread, tortillas, and flan.
The rest of Christmas Eve we spent getting ready for our annual Christmas Day BBQ potluck. We hosted about 40 people at our house the afternoon of the 25th and had carne asada, beans and many, many other yummy things that people made.

La Isla,

Hi and Happy Holidays to you from our family. I was so busy NOB with all the goings on with insurance company, I must admit, I totally forgot to take the time to wish you a Happy Chanukah. I hope you can forgive this “goy” and that a belated one will do. Mia Copa! and Mazel Tov and “I’ chayim”!

I have an American Jewish friend here in the Pueblo. He is 84 years old and still has the gift of the gab and the desire to look at pretty women! That's what he tells me! . . . . then he tells me he is looking at my wife! His beautiful Mexican wife puts up with it, with good humor. Once a year, he goes back to NYC to do his taxes. He has promised me to bring me back some good smoked lox next time. He is a real character and a loveable man. He cooks this one time in the year and here is what he had.

Latkes- 3 types: regular, sweet potato, purple potato, ( I never heard of purple potato) homemade applesauce, Brisket with carrots/onions and some Commercial Mexicana store bought doughnuts.

By the way, what did you have for dinner?

Thanks for the Chanukah greetings, Robert. To tell the truth, even when I lived in the Jewish-American heartland (the Philadelphia-New York corridor), I wasn't an observant Jew, though I usually remembered to get out my menorah and light the teeny-tiny candles during the 8 days of Chanukah. I only feasted on latkes if someone invited me over during the holiday. Reading about the food your older Jewish friend made is making my mouth water, especially the latkes and applesauce (I've never heard of purple potatoes either). If I lived in your neighborhood, I would have invited myself over! More power to your friend and the pleasure he still takes in eyeing pretty women. When I'm 84, I hope I still have enough energy and "ganas" to continue to eye handsome younger men, something I do now, in my understated, subtle way, of course : ) .

My best friend in Mexico and his mother invited me over for Christmas Day for dinner. Since she was born in Germany and lived there till shortly after WWII, it was more or less a German style meal, though with a roast turkey instead of the traditional goose as the featured protein source.

Since our Xmas Eve dinner needed to be streeeeeched once about 20 out-of-town family members (still less than half!) showed up and it was "decided" to have it at my suegro's tiny house, the turkey (stuffed gringo style) had to have extra stuffing on the side with lots of turkey gravy (¿Qué es? - ¡Es salsa gringa! - LOL) with huge casseroles of rajas de chile poblano y papas en crema and sopa seca to accompany it. Buckets of rompope, a nice rosé and plenty of "Coca" and cervesa to drink. Almost forgot the two giant flans that one of my cunyadas prepared for postre.

This old man finally gave up on the fiesta about 2 a.m., but most of the family partied around the clock and didn't crash until sometime Xmas afternoon. A VERY quiet day on Sunday, ¡Gracias a Díos!

Hi Mazbook1,

Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy One for You and Yours,

I love that "(¿Qué es? - ¡Es salsa gringa! - LOL)" Really drew a smile on this old face! Really true when you thnik about it!!!

I am with you, this old man also can't hack those hours anymore and now with a family and young children I really do prefer to go to bed with them in my arms and thank God for my blessings. Besides I wake up with a really great "love hangover"!

Gracias a Dios!

Beto, This old man can usually last until the last dance/song/etc., but after working nearly all day, cooking for hours, and finally getting ready (my Mexican wife won't allow me to go out in public with her in my usual shorts and sandals - LOL) and hauling everything over to the casa de mi suegra, I was completely worn out. Don't really know how I lasted until 2 a.m.

I can still usually outlast the two youngest of my kids and sometimes outlast my wife but sure can't outlast the two oldest kids (both in university) any longer. Even when those parties last around-the-clock, I'm in bed by 6 a.m., but this time I just hit the wall.

Hi Guys, I was in Zapopan for Xmas dinner and it was different, this is my first Xmas in Mexico so I was not sure what to expect, and I was not dissapointed, we were invited to a relatives house where they cooked Carnitas, I guess that was fine , until the Cook was completly intoxicated, he almost fell into the huge vat of oil. But I enjoyed the moment, and drank some fine Tequila................jk
