One of the questions on the new citizenship test is which state ceceeded from the union in 1841 and was re-admitted in 1848? HEEEELLLPPP!!!!

Wow, the correct answer came to me in a flash just before I read Rolly's response! Maybe this means I'll be able to ace the citizenship test in a few years without doing too much studying ( : !!

La Isla, "Maybe this means I'll be able to ace the citizenship test in a few years without doing too much studying ( : !!"

Don't count on it! The dang test changes about every 9 months or so to one that you haven't studied for. :( This happened to me in a nearly "Catch 22" sort of way. The very day that I was notified to come in for my test within the next 30 days, the old test that I had been studying for expired and a completely new and different set of test study questions was posted, but not for a week! That left me only 3 weeks to research out the answers and study for the new questions (it was too soon for anyone to post the answers somewhere on the Internet). Everyone said it was the most difficult version with the most obscure questions they had ever seen.

Fortunately, I am a hell of a researcher (when I HAVE to be) and had recently finished editing richmx2's new history book (which didn't help me much with the answers, but had taught me how to properly/easily research Mexican web sites in Spanish with Google.com.mx). I spent the next 40+ hours getting the answers (VERY difficult in some cases) and the next 2 1/2 weeks studying (having my wife constantly hurling questions randomly chosen from the list in Spanish at me was my most effective way). ¡Gracias de Díos! I passed the test with flying colors!

I won't be eligible to take the test for several years, so maybe the best thing for me to do is study slowly over this time period and then, as the test date approaches, to focus on the questions supposedly related to the test I'd be taking.

Congratulations, mazbook1, on passing with flying colors (wonder how you'd say that in Spanish)! Since I doubt I'll have a spouse to help me cram for this ordeal, I'll have to look for a study partner instead, someone to hold my hand and hurl questions at me in Spanish.

Well, with my Spanish being pretty useful, even though it's of the me defiendo variety, I would say, "Gané la mejor calificación." or "Gané el premio más alta.", but hey, we need someone like esperanza to answer questions like this.

Thanks All,
We've been using Wikipedia, switching between English and Espanol and yahoo/google search, but not the mx. variety. Will try that as well. This new version is a real bugger....very obscurely worded and at least one of the questions DOESN'T REALLY HAVE A DEFINiTIVE ANSWER!!! As in, who were the 2 ethnic groups that inhabited Teotihuacan?
Best of luck to all of us aspirants, if we win we'll really have something to be proud of, as they won't be graduating any dummies this season.

To answer my own question, I searched in my favorite on-line dictionary and found this:

IDIOMS to come through (sth) with flying colours salir airoso (de algo)
he passed all his exams with flying colours aprobó todos sus exámenes con éxito

Wow, I feel like I really lucked out. When I did my citizenship trámite (7 years ago), all I had was an interview, really relaxed and easy and my husband and toddler son were allowed to be there with me. The whole procedure took about 9 months from start to finish and it was a dream compared to immigration. I don´t think they do a whole lot of naturalizations here in Chiapas, maybe that´s why. We got the comment that it is mainly football players that change their nationality here, and that gets done in a flash!

HAPPY NEWS!
Things HAVE actually gotten better with the test.....my husband inadvertently downloaded an older version... probably the one Mazbook took. His reply about how often the test is changed got us to thinking and so we revisited the SRE web-site and found the '09 test...MULTIPLE CHOICE...and quite easy! WHEW!!! We only had to look up 20 or so out of 100, and even then we still would have guessed right on most.
There is no indication of when this test will be replaced, but it started in July '09, so we should have a while yet.
Crossing fingers!
