What do Mexicans call a Favela?

Can't Post |
In Rio ( and all of Brazil for that matter) we call poor neighbourhoods Favelas (slums in Portuguese).

How are these type of neighbourhoods called in Mexico?

and which one it considered the most crime infested and dangerous in Guadalajara?

any help would be great...

Muito Obrigado

"Colonia irregular" is fairly often used; the inhabitants are often referred to as "paracaidistas" (parachutists). I won't offer any suggestion as to which is the most "crime infested and dangerous" in Guadalajara. On the limited number of occasions when I was working with high school students doing geographical fieldwork in such colonias on the outskirts of the city, we always found the residents to be most hospitable, gracious and friendly. Indeed, many of the students, from upper middle class Mexico City backgrounds, remarked afterwards how generous the residents were with both information and with refrescos!

I would say Colonia Popular, or Barrio Popular, meaning a working class or lower neighborhood. My dictionary says that a poor neighborhood is a Barrio Bajo, although I have not seen that phrase that I can remember. The words Irregular and Paracaidistas imply that the neighborhood was settled by squatters, and that perhaps some people are living in shacks made of cast-off material. I am not sure that any of these words necessarily denote a high crime area.

Favela in Spanish is a family name. I know several people with the name Favela, including my friend Doña Martha Favela.

Ok, let me tell you what I know on this regard, El Batan is a pretty rough whereabouts on the northeast. Santa Cecilia and La Constitución around the "Jalisco Stadium", Polanco at the Est and San Martin de las Flores southbound.

All these "Barrios" are pointed by the police as among the worst to live in. Mostly considered this for gang and drug dealing problems.

Babylon translator defines a barrio a "part of town containing dilapidated or poorly constructed buidings, neighborhood or district in which prostitutes and brothels can be found". Of course you have to decide if this is what might match a Favela in Brazil.
