He's a bit over the top, but has some interesting points. With the advent of computers and data mining in the 90's, you'd be amazed at how much others know, or presume to know, about us, how and where we live, shop etc which then allows them to market to us, to predict trends and ultimately attempt to control through legislation for any number of possibilities. A smart meter seems like a good idea until you think about it. Seems there was a flap some time recently about Google capturing information on their Earth Google imaging and wasn't there something in one of the iphones about "innocently" capturing tracking information? Then we have some stores storing PIN numbers from customer CC's - which was then hacked etc. Within the next few years you'll see States attempting to replace, or supplement the gas tax with GPS information so they can charge by the mile. With declining revenues and smart/electric cars etc. they need to keep the $$'s flowing in for road maintenance etc. which is fine - except: GPS information is a track of everywhere you've been. Now, on the surface that wouldn't seem a problem if it's for "the greater good"? Let's assume I'm a developer and want to build a shopping center, or maybe just buy a lot that is available and I want to know how much traffic drives by there daily, GPS data purchased from the State (and you can bet they will sell it in a heartbeat under the "implied consent" guise) would tell that. And, it wouldn't be just 5,283 cars, it would be 3,200 Toyotas, 1,534 Chevy's etc. because that will tell me the demographic of the potential clientele. In my career of sales/marketing we were into that stuff years ago and salivating at the potential of the devices everyone now carry. I'm not a conspiracy nut, the only tin foil is used in the kitchen, but especially now as I can look back to home from a distance I see very troubling things that are being casually accepted as "progress" and to me it is anything but progress because it comes at the cost of my freedom. www.chapalaweather.net
