Web sites going dark on the 18th

Can't Post | Private Reply
Just a heads up on tomorrow the 18th, a number of sites will be "dark" from 8am to 8pm EST in support of the "stop SOPA & PIPA legislation" that would adversely affect many sites on the Internet. ChapalaWeather will be dark in support of this effort, this is a link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/...op_Online_Piracy_Act with information. Wikipedia will be dark the 18th. This is a link to a list of some companies and executives etc. opposing the SOPA legislation https://www.cdt.org/...iduals-opposing-sopa It's important.

It looks like it worked, that bill is dead. However, underneath all the yelling there are issues that need to be resolved about digital ownership. Hopefully someone besides the big entertainment companies will come up with reasonable legislation - aww, I'm dreaming.

I've got some pesos to bet it's far from "dead" and will come back later if not sooner, the big companies have too much invested in lobbyists to roll over that easy.

It will return but without the venom. The movie industry and the recording industry need protection for their property. SOPA was like going rabbit hunting with claymore mines.

steve, the feds don't need due process when they have probable cause. I don't believe that the "file sharing site" was exchanging Word files or recipes.

Well, that IS the problem now isn't it? Seems that more and more we live in a police state, very limited privacy, just fall in line with the rest of the sheep. Maybe it's time for the pendulum to swing back a bit.

I believe that you are waxing libertarian. Other people still have ownership of property and theft is still punishable.

Been to an airport lately? How about FBAR and FATCA? Talk to someone trying to survive on a small farm in the Midwest, or start a small business of most any kind, maybe you actually like 100W incandescent bulbs?

It's called "creeping incrementalism" and here's a little clip on smart meters you might find interesting.

He's a bit over the top, but has some interesting points. With the advent of computers and data mining in the 90's, you'd be amazed at how much others know, or presume to know, about us, how and where we live, shop etc which then allows them to market to us, to predict trends and ultimately attempt to control through legislation for any number of possibilities.

A smart meter seems like a good idea until you think about it. Seems there was a flap some time recently about Google capturing information on their Earth Google imaging and wasn't there something in one of the iphones about "innocently" capturing tracking information? Then we have some stores storing PIN numbers from customer CC's - which was then hacked etc.

Within the next few years you'll see States attempting to replace, or supplement the gas tax with GPS information so they can charge by the mile. With declining revenues and smart/electric cars etc. they need to keep the $$'s flowing in for road maintenance etc. which is fine - except: GPS information is a track of everywhere you've been. Now, on the surface that wouldn't seem a problem if it's for "the greater good"?

Let's assume I'm a developer and want to build a shopping center, or maybe just buy a lot that is available and I want to know how much traffic drives by there daily, GPS data purchased from the State (and you can bet they will sell it in a heartbeat under the "implied consent" guise) would tell that. And, it wouldn't be just 5,283 cars, it would be 3,200 Toyotas, 1,534 Chevy's etc. because that will tell me the demographic of the potential clientele.

In my career of sales/marketing we were into that stuff years ago and salivating at the potential of the devices everyone now carry.

I'm not a conspiracy nut, the only tin foil is used in the kitchen, but especially now as I can look back to home from a distance I see very troubling things that are being casually accepted as "progress" and to me it is anything but progress because it comes at the cost of my freedom.

RickS, For a considerably less "over-the-top" discussion of whole SOPA/PIPA fiasco, everyone should read the following:
