U.S. Consulate General Nuevo Laredo

Warden Message

April 8, 2011
The United States Consulates General in Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, and Monterrey advise American citizens that the U.S. government has received uncorroborated information that Mexican criminal gangs may intend to attack U.S. law enforcement officers or U.S. citizens in the near future in Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and San Luis Potosi. This information is being distributed to all U.S. government employees in the three states. No other information is available. If more detailed information is developed, we will advise American citizens immediately.
For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers from Mexico, a regular toll line at 001-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Mexico are encouraged to enroll with the Embassy through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) via https://travel.state.gov to obtain updated travel and security information. U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly with the Embassy or Consulates. Enrollment is important; it allows the Embassy and the State Department to assist you in an emergency. Those enrollees who wish to receive updated travel and security information must provide an e-mail address as part of their enrollment.

I should have posted this a few days ago. Was reminded by a heated discussion a few threads away...
Folks. If you do not get these messages from the Warden you should register with your consulate.
Just sayin'

You will only receive the warden messages for the consular district that you register in. For example you register as living lake side, you will not get warden messages that come out of the consulate in Monterrey NL as you do not belong to that consular district. You will only get warden messages from the Consulate in Guadalajara as that is your consular district.

I will repost messages in the forum if they have a possible broader impact. Sometimes the ones I get are area specific and not much good 5 minutes after I get them.

5 minutes in a gun fight is a long time.

FoxNews just reported that this warden message has been rescinded. Authorities are quoted as saying that they had been relying upon "bad information". While this is certainly good news, it is also a bit disconcerting. The American intelligence community has been suffering a string of embarrassing and costly mistakes of late.

Maybe it's just me, but I can easily imagine some sicarios tossing out a chisme on to the streets one day and waiting to see how long it takes before either the Mexican or U.S. governments react, then laughing their posteriors off as they retract it and tell everyone, "psyche!"

It just seems that there is a certain amount of cat-and-mouse going on for the entertainment value.

But, then again, I could be just smoking wacky tobacky. ¿Quién sabe?

Brian:

Now I realize that according to some, FOX News is never wrong but I just went to the consulate website and the warning is still there:
http://matamoros.usconsulate.gov/wm04082011en.html
It just didn't seem to make any sense that they might have pulled back the warning unless the 116 or so bodies were a fig newton of someone's imagination.

I should have been more specific. I was referring to the original post in this thread. Fox said that the warning about the uncorroborated reports of threats to US agents and civilians in the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and San Luis Potosi has been rescinded. The warden message published 4/8 no longer appears on the Nuevo Laredo consulate website so it appears Fox is correct. One would think that given the fear it instilled, that the retraction would be more heavily publicized.

"MEXICO CITY—The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it has rescinded a warning that U.S. government officials and citizens could be targeted by Mexican drug cartels in three of the country's states.
State Department Spokesman Michael Toner said, "we thought it was credible information, and then it was later deemed that it was not credible enough to warrant it remaining on the website." The warning, the first indicating Americans were being targeted by drug traffickers, said U.S. officials had "uncorroborated information that Mexican..........................."

This so called "NARCO WAR" has gone to far. They are killing each other, but also murdering thousands of innocent people. Foreign immigrants and Mexican citizens as well for no apparent reason other then to kill. I can't understand how this government can allow this type of crime against it's people to continue. It's starting to remind me of the Vietnam War. Where the US army chased the Viet Cong all over the country, sometimes catching them and killing them. Then moving on to another location while the Cong moved back in and business went back to normal. Meanwhile the civilian population was caught in between and being abused and killed by both sides. All the while the US government was telling us that they were wining the war and that it was going to be over in months. As we all know that war didn't end in a few months. As this one in Mexico isn't going to end any time soon as well.
There are many in the Mexican Government who think that they can negotiate a peace agreement with the cartels like they are some kind of legitimate government. I dont' believe it's possible anymore. The genie is out of the bottle. Crime has exploded in many parts of the country, not only narco related crime, but all forms of crime. Until something very big happens that will force the government to really do something about the crime and corruption that is ruining this beautiful country, things aren't going to change. Just my opinion.

Now there are more than just the major cartels, there are lots of plain old gangs that are funded by cartels because they are under 18 and do the same work for a lot less money. Who knows the boy next door
