WHERE TO STOP ON THE WAY????

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'll be driving from Phoenix to Lake Chapala. I see it's about a 25 hour drive figuring average 50mph in Mexico. So I'm not going to make it straight through and not wanting to "drive 'till I drop," I figure 2.5 to 3 days driving. Any suggestions on where to stay between the U.S. border and the lake?

Also, we want to bring down a lot of personal items for a 6 months/one-year stay. since we can't get near all of it in a car (especially a small one), what is the best way to transport it? One way truck rental to GDL? Shipper (probably high cost and not very reliable or secure)?

Thanks.

It's not as if you're traversing the Sahara between Phoenix and Lake Chapala. There are adequate lodging facilities all along the way from Hermosillo, Guaymas, Cd. Obregon, Navajoa, Los Mochis, Culican, Mazatlan, Tepic to Guadalajara. And even some in between.

One-way truck rentals from the US to the interior of Mexico aren't gonna happen. Look at a professional mover.

Jennifer is right. If you can't move all your things in your car or pulling a trailer, you will have to use a commercial mover. That subject has been discussed a lot on these forumns. Do a search and you'll find lots of information.

Drive to Navajoa, the first day, stay at the El Rancho hotel, before the bridge on the right hand side of the road. The next day, bypass Mazatlan and drive on down to Acaponeta. You'll have to take a left into town and across from the downtown plaza, is a nice hotel. The next day, it'll be an easy trip to your destination.

Here's another option: Stop at Obregon the first night - there's a Holiday Inn at the north end of town, or the Obregon Plaza further into town on the left side of the main drag. Safe parking and good food at both places.

Next day stop at Mazatlan - lots of good choices. We like the Playa Mazatlan on the beach at the south end of the Golden Zone. There's a nice big white high-rise hotel a few blocks inland from it that has nice ocean views from 3-4 stories on up - ask for those with a "Vista del Mar".

Final day on to Guad and Lakeside - a nice leisurely trip with pretty good roads (stay on the Cuotas) all the way.
