Horrendous news - I don't mix with narcos so feel I have not much risk of being killed in Mexico but I used to shop at the grocery store where this happened and never felt at risk there - so maybe all my thought processes are wrong. What sad, sad news.

Please pray for Rep. Giffords. She has now been confirmed in surgery, which means she is still alive. Let us hope!

Sounds like another anti-government nut like McVeigh. The 22 yr old suspect Jared Loughner is in custody. He had just before the shooting posted on myspace and fb rants about civil rights and literacy and the govt using "mind control and brainwash" methods on the people.

Also killed was a federal judge but it seems the congresswoman was the target. So far 5 have been confirmed dead.

"Anti-government nut" ... with easy access to deadly weapons ... describes a goodly percentage of Arizonans.

It's a given he was "reality challenged" and the particular flavor of his wackiness could possibly be considered "lefty" (with a lot of spin), but the kind of rhetoric that has been spewed from the right — which as included suggestions that both Judge Rolls and Representative Giffords should be targeted for violence (the Judge for his ruling in an immigration case and Ms. Giffords for being seen as holding the line against the more reactionary anti-immigration and anti-Mexican politicos in her state.

Both the Judge (appointed by George Bush I) and Ms. Gifford (a "blue dog", or conservative, Democrat) are not considered lefties by anyone outside the "Tea Party" crowd, but then, we're back talking about "anti-government nuts" again.
