I wish you success with your event Trucks although I´m not sure what USAA is even though I´m a Marine Corps veteran who lucked out and was too young for Korea and missed Vietnam by the hair of my chin by joining the Marines in 1960 when Vietnam was just a splinter in John Kennedy´s eye. Whew! Does this mean I could join despite never having been on the business end of another soldier´s bullet? I was on standby for an expedition to Cuba for a while but as you know, when you are young and gung-ho that means your guys whip their butts and we then spend our nights carousing on warm Caribbean or Atlantic beaches with hot Cuban mamas and Cuba Libres or Mojitos. I guess the reality is a bit different. Anyway, in those days (the 60s and 70s) they almost never called up reservists as they started doing in the last decade so I escaped the planned but never executed invasion of Havana since JFK figured that that was not such a good idea.

But the real reason I am posting is to take exception to the notion that there is no background music in life - at least in Mexico and by that I mean pleasant, life-affirming music since we are forunate to have a large mature garden just off Lake Chapala and I have never lived anywhere with anything approaching the numbers of songbirds we have here despite having lived in rural and sem-rural environments before. Actually, in the Mayacamas Mountains of Northern California way back in the forest where we lived, the morning peace was broken by the shrill screeches of jays (of which there appear to be none around here at Lake Chapala) attacking our pets in order to steal their food and those jays were good at their trade. I wouldn´t mess with them.

Then, in the urban environment of San Cristóbal de Las Casas there is the municipal marimba orchestra or military band concerts in the morning about 8:00AM and there is nothing like that sort of live music, especially, the haunting sounds of the marimba, to make walking the other Dawg a fine experience in the crystalline morning light.

Anyway, as I said earlier good luck on your event but how would Dawg get there?

I find the USAA insurance rates very competitive for car insurance, in the US. I've used them for years. Sadly, unless something has changed, they do not offer auto insurance in Mexico

Bob, I am also a veteran. I just did a Google search and it appears that USAA is just an insurance and investment company. https://www.usaa.com/...10509_VetExpansion09

I have 2 sons that are also veterans, I thought about sending this link to them, but I don't think I will after reading this site. One of my sons just retired from a 30 year career in The Navy. He retired as a Chief, which is a better rank than any junior officer holds in The Navy. He has life by the tail on a downhill pull now.

Nothing there that really interests me.

Your comment about USAA is akin to saying that Apple is just another computer company. As they used to say about Packards, "Ask a man who owns one."

When I first started getting insurance from USAA it was for officers and ex-officers only. They have changed these rules multiple times. Like other insurance companies, they change the rules so that they can get more premiums, so that they can gamble more with these premiums and get bonuses thereof as a result of these gambles, or pay off the bad gambles. This is how Warren Buffet got started. I call this thievery and I am disappointed that USAA has followed suit.

Insurance needs to get back to its conservative heritage in the types of investments that are done with premiums. The purpose is to ensure the policy holder, not enable get-rich scenarios for the management.

I've been with USAA for over 40 years. Although their insurance products are not available here due to Mexico's ridiculous laws, I find their banking and debit card/credit card services the best and mosty affordable. They have always received A.M. Best's highest raitings.

"A.M. Best has affirmed its highest possible financial strength ratings of A++ (Superior) and "aaa" for the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and its insurance subsidiaries.
These ratings follow Standard & Poor's recent affirmation of its own top-notch rating of AAA, or Extremely Strong, highest of 21 possible ratings, to the USAA insurance subsidiaries. Together, the rankings keep USAA in a small, elite group of companies to retain the highest marks from these well-respected rating agencies.
"USAA's low cost structure, high customer retention, effective use of technology and exceptional customer service capabilities have enabled it to build a sustainable competitive advantage in the personal lines sector," said A.M. Best in its news release. A.M. Best also cited "USAA's superior capitalization and strong operating results through focused business and financial strategies."
