Truck rental move to Mexico (Rolly response requested)

I have a friend moving to Mexico. Is it possible to bring a rented truck into Mexico? I understand that rental trailers are not allowed.

As usual, Rolly is succinct, what more can you say? - but, I'll add. When you go across the bridge in Laredo or wherever, you cross an international border, but you actually enter and exit a wormhole into a whole other universe, a whole other existence where you live by their laws, their rules and by their interpretation of those. American companies simply don't need the hassle of trying to rent and trust equipment in MX. Example: if you come here and want to rent a car for instance, be prepared to have them insist on selling you very expensive insurance, no, they won't recognize American Express coverage and if you decline all but liability they will tag your credit card for the full replacement value of the car should it not be returned for whatever reason.

The Mexican experience is great, wonderful (most of the time) but you must accept it is a whole other country that is fully justified in playing by their rules and American rental companies don't need the business - so, you want to come here, those are the rules.

Having heard the "NO" many times, I must relate that when a friend moved from Phoenix to Mazatlan, she was allowed to bring a rental trailer down, loaded to the gills. I can't remember what brand it was because it was about 5-6 yrs ago but I was truly surprised about it. She did not only once, but TWICE! It might depend on how far into Mexico you are moving, etc.
The person that helped bring it down, was not moving to Mazatlan and so, took the trailer back. I believe it was about 10ft.
It might behoove you to shop around and also check with your insurance company to see if they provide coverage for same.
Good luck to you!

Hello Stevebrtx,

I read your response with a great amount of interest and reflection. I think your response certainly not be limited solely to "cross border truck rental" but should be read for any aspect of moving to Mexico. Your response was truly thoughtful, provocative and full of reflection. What an honest and sincere answer. I have printed this answer and kept it with some other reflective responses, I have read since my move to Mexico. Thank you for your answer to this person's posting, and stirring my mind.

Regards,

Steverbtx; I like that response as well. Just accept the rules and move on or move out! Sometimes it is as you described a "worm hole" And other times more like a snake pit. When dealing with any border officials one must do a lot of tongue biting. I too have seen U haul trailers in Mexico. Probably not permitted but some Aduanero was either paid off or he was feeling kind that day. A rental truck would probably be over the weight limit allowed.

Of course you never considered that the truck could have been sold to a private party when companies like U-Haul get rid of when they can no longer write them off their taxes.

Nope. There is no other reasonable answer than some crooked aduanero.

Bennie: It was not a truck that I saw but a U haul TRAILER and it was not old. You are probably right about the aduanero!

A towed trailed must be included in ones automobile insurance plus mine has always been listed on my car papers.
Just like a car, Mexico does not want you leaving your trailer in Mexico.

If I recall correctly, professional moving companies (van lines) transfer the contents of their van to Mexican carriers when one is moving to Mexico.
I once saw a mayflower trailer being pulled by a corporate mexican dual plated tractor (cab) into mexico at the Nogalas port or entry.
